The first appeal hearing in the damages lawsuit filed by IVE’s Jang Wonyoung against Sojang was held on the morning of September 4 at the Seoul Central District Court. Sojang’s side maintained their stance of innocence in the criminal case, stating that they believed it was necessary to wait for the verdict.
Sojang had consistently spread untrue allegations about Jang Wonyoung, such as creating conflicts and spreading rumors about their romantic involvement, and even sharing multiple videos attacking her looks and personality. As a result, Jang Wonyoung took legal action against Sojang in the previous year, requesting 100 million won in compensation, and the court ultimately ruled in her favor. Despite this, Sojang appealed the decision in February, claiming that the accusations were not defamatory and that the amount of compensation awarded was excessive.
Despite the lack of criminal responsibility being established, the court declared that civil responsibility could not be evaded and set the date for the next hearing as November 27.
Sojang, who has been accused of uploading 23 videos defaming Jang Wonyoung and other celebrities between October 2021 and June of last year and making millions of won in profits, is currently on trial. On September 3, the Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office also charged Sojang with defamation and insult against other artists in addition to Jang Wonyoung.
Throughout this procedure, Jang Wonyoung and Starship Entertainment were able to gather crucial information about Sojang’s identity through the discovery system of the U.S. federal court, resulting in ongoing legal proceedings against Sojang.
It has been disclosed that BTS members V and Jungkook, along with Kang Daniel, have all brought lawsuits against Sojang. Despite being a little late, SM Entertainment (SM) has also initiated legal proceedings. Both EXO’s Suho and aespa filed complaints against Sojang in April. SM verified, stating, “Our complaints were submitted in April and the initial court session was held on September 2.”
