During her first trial at the Incheon District Court under Judge Kim Saet-byeol, Park (35), the operator of the YouTube channel “Sojang” , appeared in court on September 2. While her side admitted to creating the videos, they denied the other charges stated in the indictment.
Park’s lawyer clarified that there was no intention to defame or hinder business, and even if the statements were deemed defamatory, they were not illegal because she genuinely believed them to be true.
During the court hearing, when Judge Kim inquired about the intention to defame, Park’s attorney stated, “It was simply an expression of opinion, making it hard to consider it as defamation.”
Park entered the courtroom wearing a black outfit, glasses, a face mask, and holding an umbrella to hide her identity. When the judge inquired about her occupation and asked if she was in “business,”she replied with a confident “Yes.”
In May, Park was indicted without being detained for supposedly defaming seven celebrities, including Jang Wonyoung, by posting 23 false videos between October 2021 and June of the previous year. The videos falsely accused Jang Wonyoung of being envious and deliberately hindering a fellow trainee’s debut, as well as made false claims about the involvement of other celebrities in prostitution or plastic surgery.
The prosecution claims that Park has made approximately 250 million won in the last two years through these activities.
In a lawsuit filed by Jang Wonyoung against Park for spreading false information and defamation, the court ruled in Jang Wonyoung’s favor in January. As a result, Park was ordered to pay 100 million won in damages.
Furthermore, in March, BTS members V and Jungkook took legal action against Park by filing a defamation lawsuit seeking 90 million won in damages. Along with this lawsuit, Park is also currently facing criminal charges for defaming singer Kang Daniel.
The October 2 date has been set for Park’s upcoming trial.
