“Solo” HyunA and Solar: Music Praised, but Styling Criticized for Being “Too Excessive”

Recently, singers HyunA and Solar have shifted their focus from creating music that caters to a wide audience to pursuing more daring and unconventional projects. As a result, the public’s response to their new direction has been varied.

On May 2nd, HyunA released her new EP “Attitude”. She played a significant role in the production of the album, taking part in writing lyrics, composing, and planning the music video. As it marked her first release since joining At Area, there were great anticipations for a transformation in her image.

Upon the release of the title track “Q&A”, the public’s response was overwhelmingly positive. The song’s trendy touch, courtesy of producer GroovyRoom, received much praise from many.

Despite being recognized for her unique rapping and vocal approach in tracks such as “Nabillera” , “I’m Not Cool” and “Ping Pong” , HyunA’s latest release highlighted her delicate falsetto. However, as she embarked on her music show appearances, there was increasing dissatisfaction with her appearance. Many online users contended that the excessive use of pink blush, wet hair, and bulky furry shoes took away from her impeccable dancing and singing abilities.

On April 30th, Solar dropped her second mini-album titled “COLOURS”. As the name implies, the album’s purpose was to display her versatility as a solo artist.

The track “But I”was characterized by a rock sound, while “Colors”incorporated voguing dance, which attracted attention. Fans soon recognized “But I”as a song to help them move on from a past relationship, and it even reached the top of music show charts.

Despite receiving mixed reviews, “Colors”was praised for its addictive beat and message of respect and love for people of all colors. However, Solar faced criticism for her styling, with some feeling it made the voguing dance appear awkward rather than sophisticated.

Feedback on her music show appearances included suggestions to “tone down the styling,”compliments on the backup dancers’ outfits, disappointment with her own outfit in relation to the good song, and criticism of excessive makeup, outfit, and hair.

Popular culture critic Choi Young-gyun pointed out that public singers do not necessarily have to conform to the public’s demands, but they should also not completely disregard public opinion. In regards to HyunA and Solar’s recent experimental endeavors, Choi believes that their styling should not be the only aspect remembered and that both the singers and their agencies should work together to carefully consider their choices.
