On October 11th, prominent football coach Son Woong-jung, who is also the father of football sensation Son Heung-min, faced legal repercussions when a local court imposed a fine on him for engaging in child abuse at his training facility.
Specifically, Son Woong-jung, along with his other son Son Heung-yun and a coach from the Son Football Academy, was mandated to pay a penalty of 3 million won (approximately $2,220) due to serious allegations of child mistreatment.
Additionally, they must complete 40 hours of mandatory child abuse counseling programs.
This situation escalated in March when the parents of a child training at the Son Football Academy reported Son Woong-jung and his team to the relevant authorities, claiming that their child suffered physical injuries during a training camp in Japan.
The specific claims included that Son Heung-yun injured the child with a corner flag, necessitating two weeks of medical treatment. Furthermore, they accused Son Woong-jung of verbally assaulting the participants during the training session.
Two months post-complaint, prosecutors intervened, examining the coaches at Son Football Academy for their alleged maltreatment of young athletes.
In spite of the guilty verdict, Son Woong-jung maintained his innocence, asserting that the accusations were largely fabricated. He emphasized that his intent was merely to exhibit care and dedication towards nurturing the potential of young players in his academy.
In a related context, Son Heung-min revealed in the past that his father’s rigorous training methods compelled him to practice for extended hours during his childhood.
