Recently, Son Na-eun engaged in an interview discussing the JTBC weekend drama “Family x Melo”, sharing a variety of insights and experiences from the show. In this series, Son Na-eun plays the role of Byun Mi Rae, the daughter of Byun Moo Jin and Geum Ae Yeon, who staunchly opposes her parents’ potential reconciliation. She successfully creates a compelling melodrama romance alongside SHINee’s Choi Min-ho.
Reflecting on her collaboration with Choi Min-ho, Son Na-eun stated: “We had worked together briefly before; however, that experience was short-lived, allowing us to approach this collaboration with fresh chemistry. Having met previously made it easier for us to bond. Although he is a senior in the industry, I felt incredibly comfortable with him because we’re the same age. His passion as a senior really inspired me on set.”
Since her debut with Apink in 2011, Son Na-eun has pursued her acting career diligently. She shared, “I’ve always had a passion for acting. Initially, I had that mindset, but the more I engage in acting, the more I strive to excel and the more ambitious I become.” Describing her love for the craft, she remarked: “Every project brings new facets to improve upon, and when something doesn’t meet my expectations, I’m motivated to do better in my next role.”
In addition to Choi Min-ho and Son Na-eun, “Family X Melo”features another idol, Yoon San-ha. When asked about their shared backgrounds as singers, Son Na-eun replied, “We didn’t delve into our singing careers since our focus was on acting during the filming.” She further added, “San-ha is the youngest among us, so I wanted to mentor him. Having once been a rookie myself, I relate to the nerves he must be feeling. I aimed to support him as a senior.”
She also expressed: “I feel thrilled every time I get involved in a new project and appreciate the process of building a character. Working closely with the director, fellow actors, and staff brings me joy, and I genuinely enjoy meeting and collaborating to craft a story. Despite being an introvert (my MBTI type is I), I typically spend my free time at home, but I gain energy from being on set.”
Son Na-eun began her career at a young age and candidly shared some of her struggles. She noted, “The most challenging aspect was feeling thrust into the adult world too quickly. I felt as though I matured rapidly and faced pressure to act like an adult.” She added, “Byun Mi Rae also assumes family responsibilities due to her father, causing her to mature sooner than expected. I find that relatable.”
Despite her introverted nature, Son Na-eun expressed how much she loved performing during her school talent shows. If given the chance, she would still pursue a similar career. “I truly enjoy this profession and find it exhilarating. While it doesn’t entirely align with my personality, there are aspects that genuinely fit me, and I hope to continue succeeding in the future.”
Aside from acting, Son Na-eun has balanced her commitment to Apink and acting. She left the group in April 2022 to focus on her acting career, shortly after the release of a fan song commemorating their 11th debut anniversary. Regarding her transition from singing to acting, she said, “As a singer, feedback comes very quickly. In contrast, acting involves extensive pre-production, and the content is released later, requiring an actor to maintain their character’s presence for an extended period during filming, demanding a different kind of endurance.”
Other Apink members, such as Jung Eun-ji and Yoon Bo-mi, have also ventured into acting. Specifically, “Family X Melo”is noted for following Miss Day and Night, which starred Jung Eun-ji. Son Na-eun commented, “The prior project was Eun-ji’s, and although I didn’t watch it all, I attempted to catch it in segments. The show was a success, and I thought it was wonderful to follow up on that accomplishment. I cheer on my fellow members from afar.”
Son Na-eun is also open to the prospect of embarking on a solo singing career. Addressing the question of postponing her singing to focus on acting, she clarified, “It’s not that I’m delaying or solely concentrating on acting. There are fans awaiting my music, and if the opportunity arises, I would love to fulfill their wishes through a fan meeting.”
