Song Joong-ki Opens Up About Family Life and Parenting

On January 10, acclaimed actor Song Joong-ki graced the airwaves of SBS PowerFM’s “Park Ha-sun Cine Town.” During the segment, he shared heartfelt reflections on his journey as a father, his loving bond with his wife, Katie Louise Saunders, and the expansion of their family.

While speaking about family, Song Joong-ki revealed that they are expecting their second child in 2024. He noted, “My wife recently gave birth in Italy, and I was there briefly. Currently, I’m in Korea for filming and we keep in touch through video calls.” Emphasizing his learning curve in parenthood, he stated, “I’m actively studying parenting. Occasionally, I seek advice from Hee-joon hyung,” to which fellow guest Lee Hee-joon responded, “He’s been diligently reading parenting books.”

Moreover, Song Joong-ki shared delightful news regarding Katie’s culinary endeavors, saying, “She’s taken an interest in Korean cuisine and has mastered a lot of dishes. We’re enjoying delicious meals. Her cooking is exceptional.” He took pride in mentioning his Colombian mother-in-law and recalled flavors from his filming in Colombia for “Bogotá: Land of Last Chance,” particularly enjoying the spicy blood sausage soup, which he humorously claimed is great for hangovers.

Adding a sweet touch to their relationship, Song Joong-ki disclosed that he saved Katie’s name in his phone as “YOBO” (여보), a Korean term of endearment meaning “honey” or “darling.” He chuckled, “When Katie first heard me say ‘여보,’ she found it incredibly beautiful. We originally picked this nickname for each other.” Lee Hee-joon interjected with his own playful nickname for Katie, “Yeobongbong,” noted as “My love” in his phone.

The wonderful couple first crossed paths in 2021 through a mutual friend, and their romance quickly developed. They publicly confirmed their relationship in December 2022 and soon thereafter shared news of their marriage and pregnancy. Their first child, a son, was born in June 2023, followed by the arrival of their daughter in November 2024.

As Song Joong-ki pursues his acting career, including his pivotal role in “Bogota: City of The Lost,” which tells the story of a man entangled within the Korean community in Colombia following the IMF crisis, he remains dedicated to his family and the rewarding challenges of fatherhood.
