Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has yet to receive official confirmation, but director Jeff Fowler has hinted at the potential inclusion of a beloved character that would undoubtedly excite fans if he returns after Sonic 3. Among the various dynamic moments we may see—including Shadow the Hedgehog revving his motorcycle and launching projectiles, as well as a surprise appearance from Eggman and Gerald Robotnik—there’s growing speculation about the franchise’s future direction.
With Sonic 3’s intriguing post-credits scenes setting the stage, there’s a buzz surrounding the possibilities for Sonic 4. While Fowler has not definitively confirmed any plot details, he has expressed interest in introducing characters from the franchise’s expansive history, notably hinting at one character’s potential debut.
Could Big the Cat Make His Appearance in Sonic 4?
For fans of Big the Cat, the outlook looks promising. Fowler has acknowledged the character’s popularity and desire for him to feature in a future Sonic film. During a recent interview, he reflected on the ongoing discussions about which characters to bring into the cinematic universe.
He remarked, “I think that everyone always jokes about Big the Cat, so I can’t say when or where or how, but we’re very aware of his popularity and what that might mean for our movie universe. He’s a fan favorite, and he’s certainly one of my favorites. However, it remains to be seen when he’ll find his way to the big screen.”
Big the Cat first graced audiences with his presence in the landmark 1998 title, Sonic Adventure. As his name suggests, he is a large and powerful tabby cat who enjoys a serene life in the Mystic Ruins, particularly indulging in fishing alongside his companion, Froggy—though Froggy has a notorious habit of going missing.
If Big the Cat is included in Sonic 4, expectations are that his role will extend beyond just a playful Easter egg. Should the storyline draw inspiration from Sonic Heroes, we might see him team up with Amy Rose in a quest to rescue Froggy. Fowler indicates that his team is keen on selecting various elements from the games rather than directly adapting any specific storylines, stating, “We cast a wide net, and it always comes down to… what [games] are the best fit? What are the best pieces? Because, you know, we always want to honor and celebrate the games.”
As the sonic franchise continues to evolve, keep your eyes peeled for more updates, including recent collaborations like the Sonic 3 Build-A-Bear collection.
