Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is brimming with Easter eggs that both honor and celebrate SEGA’s legendary franchise, and among them lurks a hidden gem that the film’s director particularly adores. Jeff Fowler, the mastermind behind the Sonic films, has filled each installment with captivating nods to the beloved game series, offering fans countless moments to spot and enjoy.
These Easter eggs vary in visibility: some are instantly recognizable, like Tails piloting his biplane or the delightful sound of rings colliding on the ground, while others are subtler, such as the clever inclusion of one of the game’s release dates appearing within Tails’ translator in Sonic 2. Fowler carries a substantial wealth of Sonic knowledge, having kickstarted his career as an animator on Shadow the Hedgehog in 2005, and contributed to the cinematics of the much-debated Sonic ’06 title.
Sonic 3 continues this tradition of hidden treasures, teasing elements that may hint at the potential direction of Sonic 4 drawing from Sonic Heroes. However, one Easter egg in particular stands out, and it may have been overlooked by some viewers.
A Sneaky Biolizard Easter Egg
While Sonic Adventure 2 fans may be disappointed to find that Gerald Robotnik’s iconic Biolizard does not play a role in the plot of Sonic 3, director Jeff Fowler managed to slip in a subtle tribute to this formidable creature. In a flashback scene, viewers catch a glimpse of Shadow and Maria exploring Gerald’s secret facility, where they roller skate through the halls, stargaze, and enjoy movies together.
During one moment in the film, they watch a flick titled Beware the Alien Freak, which features a fleeting shot of a massive, lizard-like creature rampaging through a city. According to Fowler, this fleeting visual is a clever homage, representing a 1950s version of the Biolizard.
For those unfamiliar, the Biolizard serves as Shadow’s prototype within the game lore. Gerald Robotnik aimed to create the ultimate immortal lifeform and, inspired by the regenerative abilities of certain reptiles, devised a creature that could harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds. However, its immense power rendered it uncontrollable, resulting in its capture and stasis until the plot unfolds in Sonic Adventure 2.
