In a surprising turn of events, Sonic 3 has been ruled ineligible for the prestigious Best Picture award at the upcoming Oscars 2025, marking what many are calling one of the year’s most significant oversights.
The cinematic landscape of 2024 has been exceptionally vibrant, with major releases like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Dune Part 2, as well as critically acclaimed sleeper hits such as The Substance and Nosferatu. As the film industry gears up for the 97th Academy Awards, set to air on March 2, 2025, discussions are currently focused on which films and performances deserve recognition.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled a list of films that, despite being eligible for various categories, have been excluded from the Best Picture consideration. Out of an impressive 323 films recognized for Oscars eligibility, a staggering 116 have not qualified for the top honor, according to The Wrap.
Even the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog wielding a gun could not propel Sonic 3 into contention for Best Picture.
Fan Outrage Over Oscars Exclusion
Fans of Sonic are expressing their dismay and outrage over the news of the film’s exclusion from the Best Picture category. Many enthusiasts of the iconic franchise have taken to social media to voice their frustrations.
Some critics humorously speculate that the Academy is intimidated by the notion of Sonic and his friends potentially dominating the awards show. As one user joked, “The reason Sonic 3 is ineligible is because the filmmakers didn’t submit themselves for nomination in the Best Picture category. It would have been unfair to the rest of the movies, we all know Sonic 3 clears.”
While much of the backlash has a light-hearted tone, there are genuine concerns among fans who question how movies like Disney’s Mufasa secured nominations while Sonic 3 was overlooked. A fan argued, “This actually deserves an award for its visual effects. Even if you’re not a fan of these films, you have to admit they look good.”
The primary reason for Sonic 3’s disqualification appears to be its release date of December 20, 2024. According to the Academy guidelines, films must open in a commercial theater in at least one of six major U.S. metropolitan areas to be considered for Best Picture, which unfortunately excludes our beloved Hedgehog from contention.
However, there is still a silver lining for Sonic fans. Despite the film’s absence from the Best Picture race, Keanu Reeves remains in contention for Best Actor thanks to his remarkable portrayal of Shadow the Hedgehog.
