After a long period of anticipation, the highly-awaited trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has finally been released, giving fans their first glimpse of Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Shadow – and hinting at the much-awaited demise that fans have been eager to witness.
In 2022’s sequel, we were introduced to Knuckles, Sonic’s adversary-turned-ally with spiky fists, and together they joined forces to defend the Master Emerald from the mustached villain, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), also known as Eggman.
Sonic 3 will feature one of the franchise’s most significant characters, who made a brief appearance in Sonic 2’s post-credits scene that left fans cheering: Shadow, the gun-wielding, black-and-red rival of the blue blur. Warning: possible spoilers ahead.
In the initial preview for the third installment, it is evident that Shadow will serve as the antagonist (at least in the beginning of the movie). After managing to break out of the government’s covert “Project Shadow”base, we catch a glimpse of him attacking Knuckles, followed by scenes of him riding his motorcycle and engaging in a battle with Sonic in the sky.
The conclusion features a surprising revelation: Gerald Robotnik (Eggman’s grandfather) will make an appearance, portrayed by Jim Carrey… however, this is not the most significant aspect. For those familiar with the story, the burning question remains: will Maria meet her demise?
Maria plays a significant role in Shadow’s story, but I won’t reveal any spoilers. Not only is she Gerald’s granddaughter and Robotnik’s cousin, but her involvement with G.U.N. and her hedgehog companion holds great importance.
In the trailer, Shadow’s name is not mentioned and she is only briefly seen, portrayed by Alyla Browne from the hit show Sting. All we can reveal is… have your tissues at the ready.
After watching the trailer, one viewer wrote on Twitter that Shadow’s smile showed that he wasn’t always the way he is now and that Maria had changed him. Another user commented that they loved the idea of Shadow going on a rampage to find Maria.
“Shadow, Maria, Gerald, London, and the motorbike – this Christmas treat is going to be absolutely incredible,”exclaimed a third person on Twitter.
The release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theaters is still set for December 21, 2024.
