Ben Schwartz, who lends his voice to Sonic the Hedgehog in the successful film trilogy, recently indicated that the prospect of a Super Smash Bros. movie is becoming increasingly tangible. However, he cautioned that significant challenges still lie ahead.
The Sonic films have captivated audiences and generated considerable box office success, joining ranks with other noteworthy video game adaptations such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Detective Pikachu. Each of these films features popular characters from Nintendo’s iconic platform fighter, Super Smash Bros.
As an advocate for a potential Smash Bros. film, Schwartz is not alone. Jeff Fowler, the director of the Sonic films, has expressed his enthusiasm for a crossover featuring both Sonic and Mario, highlighting the unique excitement such a film could generate.
The Road Ahead for a Super Smash Bros. Movie
In a recent interview with Variety, Schwartz shared his admiration for Chris Pratt, who voices Mario, expressing a desire to collaborate with him on a future project.
He stated, “What I really think could be bananas is if we get a Super Smash Bros. spinoff, but that would take so many different studios being kind to each other at the same time.” This sentiment underscores the complex nature of such a collaboration, given the competition among studios.
Sonic’s voice actor is eager for a Super Smash Bros. movie.
Schwartz enthusiastically remarked on the feasibility of a battle royale featuring beloved video game characters, saying, “If you want to have a battle royale with a bunch of people we all love in video games, because I’m a video game nerd, I would not be against it. I would see if Paramount would let me go play.”
With the anticipated release of a Legend of Zelda film on the horizon, Schwartz’s optimism for a Smash movie appears to be grounded in a rising trend of successful adaptations in the industry.
“We’re getting closer. There’s a Pikachu movie that already exists,” he added. Schwartz emphasized that collaboration among competing studios might be necessary to bring such ambitious projects to fruition and share financial benefits collectively. Last year, there were rumors suggesting that Illumination was proposing an Avengers-style Super Smash Bros. movie to Nintendo; however, the realization of such a project would likely require several spin-off films to lay the groundwork.
