Sony has unveiled its strategy to combat scalpers of the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 Pro console, making it significantly harder for future resellers to profit from this limited edition.
The announcement of the PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary console has resulted in astounding resale prices, with scalpers listing the console for as high as $10,000. With limited stock available and no indication of when additional pre-orders will open, PlayStation fans in the West have found themselves at the mercy of these resellers.
However, Sony Japan has now introduced a new plan designed to prevent resellers from acquiring the 30th Anniversary console and to ensure that true fans can obtain it.
In a post on the official Japanese PlayStation website, Sony outlined the requirements that potential buyers of the PS5 Pro must meet to purchase the limited edition console.
First, every buyer must possess an active Sony account that has been registered in Japan. Additionally, players need to have logged into their PS5 or PS4 for a total of at least 30 hours between Saturday, February 22, 2014, and Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 23:59.
The PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary console has proven extremely difficult to secure.
This initiative marks a significant improvement compared to the chaotic pre-order situation for the PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary in the West, where the console sold out almost instantly—leaving many fans disheartened.
While it is still uncertain how many of the limited 12,300 edition consoles have been sold, this new strategy should ideally keep the retro-themed bundle out of scalpers’ hands.
For those still eager to get their hands on this PS5 Pro bundle, keep in mind that pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Bundle will commence on October 10, 2024.
Fortunately, Sony has not imposed any restrictions on the rest of the collection, which features a 30th anniversary-themed PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, DualSense controllers, DualSense Edge, and PlayStation Portal.
