Sony’s Ambitious Plan to Introduce “Real Smells” in Gaming Has GTA 6 Fans Reacting Similar

In a surprising twist, fans are expressing skepticism about Sony’s ambitious plans to introduce in-game scents to the PlayStation ecosystem. This innovative feature has left many Grand Theft Auto (GTA) enthusiasts apprehensive about the potential implications.

For years, virtual reality (VR) has been steadily integrated into the gaming industry, with Sony leading the charge. The recent success of the PSVR2 headset has marked its strongest quarter since its launch, propelled by the releases of titles like Alien: Rogue Invasion and Hitman: World of Assassination. Although both games faced criticism, they nonetheless generated excitement among players.

As major tech players like Apple and Valve invest in VR, it’s evident that we are only scratching the surface of what this technology can offer. However, the rapid advancements have led some to worry that these innovations may soon exceed comfortable limits, a sentiment particularly felt among the GTA 6 fan community.

Concerns Among GTA 6 Fans Regarding In-Game Scents

During the CES 2025 press conference, a demonstration showcased gameplay from The Last of Us, allowing participants to actually smell the decaying fungus present in the game. Although Sony did not specify a timeline for when this technology might become available, many fans of GTA 6 are voicing their reluctance to embrace such features due to the nature of the game’s environment.

One fan succinctly stated, “I think I speak for everyone when I say nobody asked for this.” Another chimed in, questioning the merit of added smells, saying, “I can’t think of a single game that will enhance my experience by smelling it.”

On the flip side, some gamers see the potential for increased immersion, particularly when considering titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, which may benefit from olfactory enhancements, such as the smell of the wilderness.

One optimistic commenter mentioned, “It’s a very good idea and a nice beginning for higher immersion games in the future.” It’s clear that opinions are divided, and while the technology sparks intrigue, it seems we still have some time before it becomes a reality.
