Sooyoung Discusses Feelings on Not Being SNSD’s Center, Limited Screen Time, and Role Parts

On her 17th debut anniversary, Sooyoung humorously shared her thoughts about having reduced screen time and fewer parts in SNSD. Why was she not chosen as the center of the group?

On September 9th, the first episode of the YouTube web show “Hey, Come Here”Season 2 was uploaded, hosted by Super Junior members Donghae and Eunhyuk.

Sooyoung made a special guest appearance, and the trio reminisced about their experiences as former SM Entertainment artists.

The K-pop idols discussed how line distribution operates within the label, noting that center roles were assigned to specific members rather than rotating.

Donghae commented:

“When you form a group, the positions are critical. We had our positions clearly defined.”

Sooyoung concurred, recalling that the same was true for Girls’ Generation, mentioning the well-known “Bermuda Triangle”— YoonA, Yuri, and Seohyun — as the group’s core members.

However, Sooyoung shared her experience of not being assigned such a role, saying:

“But I didn’t have anything like that. I didn’t know about center positions. I guess I didn’t realize it was important. And I didn’t think it mattered either. I thought I could work hard at the edges.”

As the group continued, she initially perceived the lack of opportunities for herself as an issue and amusingly expressed:

“They stayed the same… I wondered if I could get a chance, too. Now, I’ve got my own moves, too. Like in ‘Genie,’ I could do something like that. There’s no reason I couldn’t. But since it’s been set for a long time, who doesn’t know? Who doesn’t know how pretty YoonA is? They could rotate things a bit. They could give someone else a chance. Since everyone already knows she’s pretty.”

Sooyoung further discussed her lesser screen time, stating:

“I thought, couldn’t I get a little more screen time, like 3 seconds?”

However, in hindsight, Sooyoung understood that it benefited the team and acknowledged YoonA’s unique charm. She aimed to excel in singing, yet Taeyeon was present, and when she focused on dancing, Hyoyeon stood out as well.

Continuing the conversation, Sooyoung recalled striving for more lines during their 7th year, specifically during the “Lion Heart”era. She approached the A&R team, asking if she could sing the entire song to determine which parts would suit her best. Though she felt embarrassed, she gave her all, only to end up with a disappointing result.

“When I heard it back, I thought I did pretty well. But then they gave me my part, and it was the rap part. Looking back, I think the parts had already been decided from the start. At least I gave it a shot.”
