Sooyoung from Girls’ Generation Raves About NewJeans: “You Can’t Help but Keep Watching; I Feel Like I Gave Birth to Hyein”

On September 11th, a video titled “The Tears of Girls’ Generation We Loved Back Then / Hyoyeon who buys me food well EP.11 Girls’ Generation Sooyoung Part 2” was published on the YouTube channel “Hyo’s Level Up” .

As Sooyoung gears up for her solo debut, she reflects on the joyous moments that have shaped her album preparation. She expressed, “To debut as a solo artist, I wondered, ‘Isn’t it a bit late for me?’ However, I’ve always wanted this. I kept pursuing it, but the timing never aligned until this year when everything finally fell into place.”

She elaborated, “Now that I’m in my 30s, I feel I have a better understanding of my craft. Whether it be dance, singing, or acting, I’m just starting to grasp it. I often worked hard without full knowledge, but now that I have a clearer vision, I think, ‘What can I do?’ I engaged in every aspect of this project. There wasn’t a single part I overlooked, which has been incredibly fulfilling for me. I included all my previously written songs this time.”

Hyoyeon shared her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m so excited. I can’t even guess how it will turn out. You remind me of artists like Namie Amuro and BoA. I’m really curious.” Sooyoung responded, “But considering your solo work and Taeyeon’s too, the standards for Girls’ Generation solo acts are really high. It’s quite daunting.”

Sooyoung also recounted Tiffany’s emotional response to her solo song. “I sent it to Tiffany, and after that, I received a video call from her. She was in tears, expressing how she felt my hard work through the song. Tiffany said it reminded her of me when I was 12, which triggered her tears. It took me back to when Tiffany held her first concert in LA, where I cried during her opening song, reflecting on all the moments we’ve shared and the struggles she overcame. It felt like a genuine connection, showcasing our growth.”

Hyoyeon, resonating with both Tiffany and Sooyoung, also became emotional. Sooyoung added humorously, “If people saw this, they’d think it’s hilarious and wonder what’s wrong with us!” She continued to share her commitment, saying, “I worked hard on my vocal lessons this time. I’m responsible for singing my solo part for three minutes straight, a challenge I haven’t faced in years. This experience has helped me appreciate the struggles of Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun.”

When asked about any junior artists she admires, Sooyoung expressed her genuine affection for the group NewJeans, stating, “I genuinely love NewJeans. They are not just cute; they perform exceptionally well. Watching them is captivating—it makes you want to see more of their fan cams to observe their growth.”

Hyoyeon agreed, adding, “Their progress is evident. Although I’m not their producer, I feel immense pride.” Sooyoung playfully chimed in, “It feels like I gave birth to them. Honestly, I feel like I gave birth to Hyein,” eliciting laughter from those around.

Sooyoung is set to showcase her solo debut in Japan this October.
