Alfred Molina, star of Spider-Man 2, recounted a heartbreaking anecdote about his father’s disapproval of his acting career.
Despite being recognized by many for his tough portrayal of Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2, Molina opened up about a very personal experience involving his father’s disapproval of his chosen career in acting.
During a career retrospective interview with Vanity Fair, Molina recounted how his father never understood his decision to pursue acting in the early days of his career due to the low income it provided.
“Molina remembers the time when he was working as a waiter in the same restaurant as his father. He takes pride in his skills as a waiter and even received an offer from the management to attend a two-week management training course. However, he turned down the opportunity because he had already secured a job in acting. When his father questioned him about the acting job and its pay, Molina replied that he was getting union wages of 15 pounds per week. Surprised, his father asked how much he was making at the restaurant, to which Molina responded with a range of 30-35 pounds per week. His father couldn’t believe that Molina would choose to make less money in acting when he was already making more as a
He gave me a look, the kind reserved for the mad and lost. It was as if he didn’t even know me. All I could manage to say was, “This is my passion, dad.”Unfortunately, he never quite understood. I know I disappointed him. If only he had lived a little longer, perhaps he would have seen that I had not wasted my time.

After his father’s passing in 1999, Molina disclosed that his stepmother attempted to present him with a trunk filled with newspaper clippings, magazine cutouts, and fan letters all related to the actor, which his father had collected throughout the years but never discussed.
Naturally, Molina was taken aback by this apparent display of support and declined the trunk, recognizing that his father’s lack of interest in his career is the reason he constantly strives to uplift his own children by reminding them of their brilliance.
Although his father does not approve, Molina appears content with his career decision. In the same interview, he reminisced about his most enjoyable role throughout the years: Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2.
Molina expressed his excitement about reprising the role of Doc Ock for Spider-Man: No Way Home, stating, “I was thrilled. Not only is it a joy to play the character, but it truly transformed my life. It not only elevated my career, but also introduced me to a whole new audience of film enthusiasts.”
There is a fan base that adored movies such as Chocolat, Enchanted April, and Frida, and now the children of those fans are developing an appreciation for Fred Molina as he takes on the role of Doc Ock.
Spider-Man: No Way Home revived the character from retirement when Peter unintentionally merged his universe with those of Tobey Macguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man.
Despite uncertainty surrounding Molina’s potential future appearances as the character in upcoming Marvel movies, fans can find comfort in knowing the significance of the role to the actor.
