Spider-Man 4: No Way Home Director Opens Up About Departure from MCU

As he promotes his latest film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, director Jon Watts has finally disclosed the reason behind his departure from the MCU.

Jon Watts is on the verge of making headlines once more with his new comedy/thriller, Wolfs, featuring Hollywood heavyweights Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Watts’ career has been nothing short of a gem, catapulting him to fame with his MCU Spider-Man trilogy after being relatively unknown.

The final installment of that trilogy, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, quickly became one of the highest-grossing movies in the MCU and solidifies Spidey as the first Marvel character to have two films surpass the coveted $1 billion box office mark.

After experiencing such success, Watts told The Hollywood Reporter that he felt content to call it a day. He acknowledged that he could never replicate that same level of success and wanted to leave on a high note.

“Watts recalls the unique time when the movie was released and the overwhelming response it received. She acknowledges that such a moment can never be replicated.”

Director Jon Watts reveals he stepped away from superhero movies because he knew No Way Home was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

After the success of Spider-Man, Watts was initially chosen to direct Marvel’s highly-anticipated Fantastic Four reboot, but he ultimately departed from the project in 2022. A few months later, WandaVision director Matt Shakman stepped in to take over.

Despite being one of the top contenders, Watts ultimately decided not to direct the upcoming Avengers duology of Doomsday and Secret Wars, which paved the way for the Russos to take on the project once again.

There is uncertainty among fans about Spider-Man’s next steps following Watts’ departure. According to rumors, the upcoming Spider-Man 4 may take place on Battleworld, potentially leading to another multiverse adventure like No Way Home.

Meanwhile, Watts is occupied with promoting Wolfs, a film featuring Pitt and Clooney as rival fixers hired for the same task. Additionally, he is one of the creators of Skeleton Crew, the upcoming Star Wars series on Disney+.
