Spider Man Noir: The Nicolas Cage Surprise We Deserved

It has been officially announced that renowned actor Nicolas Cage will return to play Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming Marvel TV series “Noir.”The show, which will be called “Noir,”is set to premiere on MGM+’s linear channel, with international viewers being able to watch it on Amazon Prime Video.

After lending his voice to the character in the Oscar-winning animated feature, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”(2018), Cage will once again don the black coat.

This marks the inaugural appearance of ‘Spider-Man’ in a live-action project.

The Story of Noir

The series, starting in 2009, will be inspired by the Spider-Man Noir comics. It will fully embrace the dark and gritty 1930s New York atmosphere as it chronicles the struggles of a hardened private detective who must confront his current occupation and his past as the sole protector of the city.

Cage made his debut as the character in animated form on the big screen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, playing the role of mentor and ally to Miles Morales.

Noir’s portrayal of the fan-favorite hero will delve deeper than his typical greyscale exterior and instead aim to create a multi-layered portrait that challenges the notion of simplistic black-and-white characterization.

Revisiting a character he has previously expressed his admiration for, this is an opportunity for Cage to embody a blend of his favorite golden age performances, including Robinson, Cagney, and Bogart.

Despite Variety’s exclusive report in 2023 about the series being in development, Nicolas Cage’s participation was not disclosed.

In addition to serving as co-showrunners and executive producers, Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot will also be directing the series. ‘Noir’ was a collaborative effort with Uziel and Lightfoot, as well as the team behind “Into The Spider-verse”- Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal – who were also involved in the execution of the project.

The news was brought to attention before Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers today. It is a great privilege for us to introduce the Noir series to our worldwide Prime Video subscribers, as it offers a distinctive opportunity to expand the Marvel universe.

Vernon Sanders, Head of Television for Amazon MGM studios, announced that our new superhero will be played by the highly skilled Nicolas Cage. The producing team, consisting of Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, along with the dedicated team at Sony, are committed to accurately expanding this franchise.

Cage will be making his first regular TV appearance. The actor, known for his role in the Ghost Rider series, most recently appeared in “Dream Scenario”and “Renfield,”both of which premiered in 2023.

Is Nicolas Cage returning to the Spider-Verse?

Furthermore, Cage has been confirmed to make a comeback in the animated Spider-Verse.

Despite Cage’s solo Spider-Man adventure gaining momentum, he still has some unfinished business to attend to in a world beyond his own in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

The conclusion of last year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse saw the initial multiversal spiders Noir, Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) team up with Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and her task force to rescue Miles (Shameik Moore) from the grasp of his malevolent counterpart from Earth-42 and, ultimately, safeguard the Spider-Verse.

Cage is set to join a larger team consisting of Spider-Man (Jake Johnson), Spider-Man India (Karan Soni), and Spider-Punk (Daniel Kaluuya), among other characters, as teased by Lord and Miller for the third installment of the trilogy. Unfortunately, the release of the film has been postponed indefinitely, with a possible release date in 2025.

About Spider-Man

Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man, is a superhero who was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko. His first appearance was in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962) during the Silver Age of Comic Books. He is featured in various American comic books published by Marvel Comics, as well as in multiple movies, television shows, and video game adaptations set in the Marvel Universe. In the stories, Peter Parker is the alter ego of Spider-Man, and he was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City after his parents, Richard and Mary Parker, passed away in a plane crash.

In 1977, Nicholas Hammond first portrayed Peter Parker / Spider-Man in a made-for-television film. He reprised the role twice more before Sony Pictures Entertainment obtained the film rights to the character in 1999. This led to the creation of two film series: the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007) starring Tobey Maguire, and the Marc Webb Amazing Spider-Man films (2012 and 2014) starring Andrew Garfield. In February 2015, a deal was made between Disney, Marvel Studios, and Sony to share the rights to the character, resulting in a new version of Spider-Man being introduced and incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
