Despite the star-studded cast of Jeon Jong-seo, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Moo-yeol, Lee Soo-hyuk, and Jung Yu-mi, “Queen Woo”, Tving’s first historical drama, has not lived up to expectations. Although it initially gained attention for its impressive casting, the drama’s first release on August 29th was met with disappointment as it was criticized for its excessive focus on bed scenes.
The historical drama, “Queen Woo”, revolves around the queen’s fight for survival and her attempts to secure a new king. Following the unexpected death of the king, she is faced with a race against time as she becomes the target of power-hungry princes and five tribal factions vying for control within a 24-hour period.
Jeon Jong-seo portrays the character of Queen Woo-hee in the series, who is a prominent figure. After the king’s passing, Woo-hee boldly left the palace and took matters into her own hands by handpicking the next ruler to ascend the throne. Her determination and independence make her a powerful and resilient woman.
If the drama had solely centered on this aspect, it could have potentially become an epic historical drama with a strong focus on female characters. However, the drama “Queen Woo”chose to explore other elements instead of solely focusing on Woo-hee’s 24 hours of urgency. The first four episodes have been released and each one, except for episode 3, contains scenes involving nudity and beds.
Actress Jung Yu-mi explained at the drama’s press conference that she felt pressured during her nude scene, but acknowledged its importance to the story. However, there is confusion surrounding the inclusion of certain exposed scenes.
In the opening scene of the first episode, a shaman eagerly gazes at the sky and removes her clothing, anticipating the future. Later on, Go Nam-moo (played by Ji Chang-wook), the king, returns from battle and requires treatment for his wounds. His healing process involves engaging in sexual acts with three maids to alleviate his pain. This particular scene lasted for an astonishing 3 minutes and 23 seconds, equivalent to 203 seconds.
In the second episode, Jung Yu-mi’s chest is revealed. Woo-soon (portrayed by Junv Yu-mi), the older sister who envied her younger sister Woo-hee’s role as queen, obtains a potion from her. After Go Nam-moo consumes the potion and passes away, Woo-soon, who also takes a dose, engages in sexual intercourse with a woman.
In the fourth episode, Woo-hee is faced with the decision of choosing a prince to marry following the death of the king. According to the custom of marriage where the younger brother takes on the responsibility of marrying his sister-in-law on behalf of the older brother, she ultimately visits the third prince, Go Bal-ki (played by Lee Soo-hyuk). However, after witnessing Go Bal-ki’s violent tendencies, Woo-hee attempts to marry another prince. When Go Bal-ki discovers this, he tries to claim her as his own. As part of his plan, he has sexual relations with his wife and then kills her, believing the advice that having a wife would prevent him from taking over the queen.
Similarly, “Queen Woo”serves as a reminder of MBC’s popular historical drama “My Dearest”from the previous year. Like “My Dearest,”this drama also successfully blends historical elements with a romantic storyline. It is a testament to the skillful storytelling that both dramas possess. Despite the lack of any intimate scenes, “Queen Woo”showcases the strength of women and the genuine love of men, just like “My Dearest”did.
Meanwhile, fans are anticipating that “Queen Woo”will be able to captivate viewers with its quality rather than relying on bed scenes in the remaining six episodes.
