Spy x Family Code: White Review – Anime Caper Worthy of True Lies

The new anime movie for Spy x Family stays true to its roots as an action-packed, comedic spy show, with even more zany elements reminiscent of True Lies. The result is a highly entertaining film that solidifies the comparison between the two.

The Forger family in Spy x Family Code: White embarks on a tranquil overnight trip in an effort to further Loid’s objective of gaining the trust of Anya’s principal, the main target in Operation Strix. This mission is crucial to the entire premise of Spy x Family.

Despite being threatened with losing the assignment, Loid has managed to build a second life with Yor, his assassin wife, and their dog, Bond. Throughout the two seasons of the anime show, we witness Loid’s gradual realization that his family is more than just a cover, and Code: White only strengthens their bond.

A preamble provides a solid foundation for new viewers, as both Anya’s telepathic abilities and Bond’s foresight make for a winning combination. With one being a child and the other a dog, Spy x Family only becomes more comical as they are just as likely to cause problems as they are to solve them. A prime example of this is when Anya accidentally jeopardizes national security by indulging in a tasty chocolate treat, leading to a military manhunt that forces Loid and Yor to join in the chaos.

Despite the unfortunate timing, the relationship between the two individuals is strained due to suspicions of infidelity. Additionally, screenplay writer Ichirō Ōkouchi, who was in charge of Season 2 of the TV series, skillfully manages the blend of personal and larger themes with a sense of assurance.

Similarly, Takashi Katagiri consistently showcases the budget and scale of this cinematic outing, while still staying true to the core theme of a young family navigating life. Even amidst a growing conflict, the sudden disappearance of Anya adds a new level of intensity to the shoot-outs and fiery showdowns that follow.

Wit Studio and CloverWorks, renowned production houses, excel in showcasing the skills of Loid and Yor. These two characters possess the ability to effortlessly defeat multiple enemies, and are given ample opportunities to display their prowess in unique environments that emphasize their effectiveness and mercilessness.

The narrative of Spy x Family is slightly delicate as two of the main characters are skilled assassins. It is important to have empathy for them while also acknowledging their abilities. Code: White successfully portrays them as heroes by contrasting them with a comically evil antagonist, a ruthless general who takes pleasure in torturing young captives.

This film has a pulpy setup that fully unfolds around the halfway point when the subplots come together. While it may not have any shocking twists and turns, its execution is skillful. A hostage situation turns into a beautifully depicted and delightfully absurd daydream, leaving me both stunned and amused.

Spy x Family Code: White is primarily a comedy, but it also incorporates elements of capers, romantic comedy, action, and fantastical storytelling, all while maintaining its core theme of heartfelt familial love. This is what has propelled the franchise to success in both manga and television, and it translates seamlessly onto the big screen.

Frigis, the town they explore, is a charming winter wonderland with bustling markets and delicious traditional dishes. The dynamic between Bond and Anya and the comical mishaps they encounter could easily lead to a spinoff, while Yor’s uncertainties about her role as a partner and mother make her a relatable hired assassin, reminiscent of Bill Hader’s character in Barry.

Spy x Family Code: White Review Verdict: 4/5

The culmination of all these elements can be seen in Spy x Family Code: White, making it an incredibly enjoyable viewing experience. While dedicated fans may encounter some annoyance with the constant explanations, it is a small price to pay in order to expand the Forger family’s fan base.

It could be argued that Yor’s subplot about witnessing Loid with another woman is slightly unfinished, and as a result, the overall situation remains mostly unchanged. However, this leaves room for potential intrigue in Spy x Family Season 3. As the series is still thoroughly enjoyable, there is no urgent need to deviate from its current path.

The movie Spy x Family Code: White is currently playing in US cinemas and will be released in the UK on April 26th.
