On December 7, 2023, a group of journalists congregated at Gwanghwamun Station before embarking on a visit to the highly confidential set of Squid Game 2, located in Daejeon, Chungcheong Province, South Korea. This exclusive tour of two meticulously guarded sets offered a tantalizing preview of the upcoming season of this global sensation.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, alongside CEO Kim Ji-yeon and art director Chae Kyung-sun, presented intriguing insights regarding the highly anticipated storyline. Continuing from the first season’s cliffhanger, protagonist Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) opts not to board his flight, choosing instead to return to the game arena fueled by a desire for revenge. As Hwang elaborated, “Season 2 will introduce new characters, since many beloved figures did not survive the first season. The narrative this time will delve into the intricate personal relationships among the participants.”

The new season is set to feature a varied cast of younger participants, reflecting a broader spectrum of ages, genders, and backgrounds. Hwang noted, “While the first season explored the bond between Gi-hun and Sang-woo, this new installment shifts focus to private relationships, which has been a thrilling aspect to develop with both newcomers and seasoned actors.”

Innovative Set Designs and Thematic Depth

The set design for Season 2 promises to retain the essence of its predecessor while significantly amplifying its scale and symbolism. The iconic dormitory has been reconstructed, now offering a more vivid portrayal of life and death themes.

Art director Chae Kyung-sun revealed that the new dormitory design accommodates multiple rounds of gameplay, with vacant beds that poignantly symbolize the lives lost. “The construction of these beds, which required cranes, took us over two months to finish,”she disclosed.

One of the standout features of Season 2 is the introduction of an OX voting system, allowing participants to choose whether to remain in the game after each round. This system is visually represented through distinct uniforms, facilitating an exploration of conflict and division among the players. Hwang stressed, “The OX theme is central to this season; it reflects our society’s growing divisions regarding religion, gender, and class. Our aim is to satirize how individuals delineate themselves from others.”

Chae further explained the visual storytelling elements, mentioning, “We integrated floor markings featuring the OX symbol and created a lighting scheme that heightens tension. Initially, we advised using fluorescent paint, but the director preferred dramatic contrasting LED lights that illuminate significantly in darker settings, accentuating moments of choice. Red and blue were chosen to symbolize ideological divides, adding to the narrative’s thematic richness.”

The classic pink, maze-like staircase from the first season returns but has undergone notable enhancements. “We’ve reimagined the staircase, improving both its flow and structure, expanding the area to approximately 400 square meters,”Chae stated. “While the vibrant pink hue evokes innocence, the revamped design enhances visual cues to correspond with the escalating stakes and emotional weight of the games.”
