Kang Ha-Neul, the talented actor from Squid Game 2, has spoken out against YouTubers who exploit the spread of harmful rumors about celebrities, particularly as he prepares to portray a cyber wrecker in his upcoming thriller film, Streaming.
In this gripping new project, Kang takes on the role of Woo Sang, a leading South Korean streamer known for his crime content. Woo Sang’s relentless quest for fame pushes him to increasingly reckless behaviors, raising critical questions about the pursuit of online notoriety.
While promoting Streaming, the 35-year-old actor shared his insights concerning the reality behind his character’s actions.“I hope audiences recognize that Woo Sang’s actions are fundamentally wrong, ” he conveyed in an interview with Korea JoongAng Daily.
Kang highlighted the moral complexity of his character, stating, “As an actor, I aimed to portray Woo Sang as he would see himself—justifiable in his actions. However, if such a cyber wrecker existed in real life, it would undoubtedly be detrimental.”
Moreover, Kang expressed a desire for Streaming to prompt introspection amongst viewers regarding their media consumption: “I may be presumptuous in saying this, but if watching the movie causes even a slight shift in how people engage with countless online videos, then it has successfully fulfilled its purpose.”
Kang Ha-Neul Discusses His Character, Woo Sang
In further discussing Woo Sang, Kang characterizes him as arrogant and self-absorbed, emphasizing a personal distaste for such traits: “Woo Sang is an attention seeker. I aimed to showcase him as excessive and imbued with a sense of self-importance.”
He elaborated on his inspiration for the character, saying, “I drew inspiration from individuals I personally find undesirable—those who boast without depth, who seem solely preoccupied with appearances, and who construct their lives on falsehoods. He represents a person I would never wish to befriend.”
The remarks from the Squid Game 2 star resonate amid rising apprehension over online harassment in South Korea. Many celebrities find themselves under attack from malicious trolls and cyber wreckers alike.
A poignant example is actress Kim Sae-Ron, who endured defamation at the hands of YouTubers disseminating derogatory content about her life. These cruel online assaults are believed to have contributed to her difficulties prior to her tragic death on February 16.
Set to hit theaters in South Korea on March 21, Streaming follows Woo Sang as he livestreams his investigation into an unsolved serial killer, unaware that the murderer is monitoring his every move.
