On December 26, Park Jong-nam, recognized as a skilled practitioner of jackstones (gonggi) from SBS’s “Life Perfectionist” , announced on his social media that he made his debut on Netflix as a hand double.

Just two days before his wedding in October 2023, Park received an unexpected opportunity. Despite being unaware of the specifics of the gonggi scene, Park was fortunate to have taken time off for his wedding, allowing him to accept the proposal with enthusiasm.

A Unique Filming Experience

Upon arriving at the filming location in Daejeon, Park recounts needing to sign a comprehensive confidentiality agreement. He was invited to lunch with a remarkable group, including notable figures such as Lee Byung-hun, Lee Jung-jae, Kang Ha-neul, as well as the director Hwang Dong-hyuk and the assistant director who had reached out to him.

Park was pleasantly surprised by the warm atmosphere during lunch. The cast and crew expressed gratitude for his presence, considering his wedding was imminent, and took an interest in his proficiency with gonggi, even extending their congratulations on his marriage.

Collaboration with Kang Ha-neul

Park Jong-nam developed a special admiration for Kang Ha-neul while working closely together. In “Squid Game 2” , Ha-neul plays the character Kang Dae-ho, who showcases his gonggi prowess in episode 4, reminiscing about childhood games with his sisters. Park was able to bring this intricate scene to life with his unique skills.

Reflecting on the filming, Park noted, “Shooting the gonggi scene was surprisingly straightforward. We completed it in just two takes, which was quicker than I anticipated. What impressed me most was Kang Ha-neul’s constant support; he even asked me to teach him the game, and we played together afterward. He even gave me bread as a gift for my wife, reinforcing my understanding of why he is so beloved.”

Kang Ha-neul: A Star of Kindness

Kang Ha-neul’s reputation for generosity extends far beyond the set of “Squid Game 2” . Alongside fellow entertainers Yoo Jae-suk and Park Bo-gum, he is celebrated as one of the industry’s “stars of good deeds”. In 2023, Kang made headlines by discreetly aiding struggling actors, providing financial support for rehearsal spaces, acknowledging the significant challenges posed by the pandemic.

In an interview promoting his romantic comedy “Love Reset” , directed by Nam Dae-jung, Kang shared his motivations: “The shifts in the industry, particularly with the rise of virtual auditions, have created hurdles for many aspiring performers. I wanted to lighten that load, especially since I occasionally make use of such spaces myself. It wasn’t a large sacrifice, especially considering how generous others had been to me.” His initiatives have rightfully earned him the title of “apex predator of good deeds,”as he continues to inspire positivity through 2025 and beyond.
