Squid Game Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk Confirms the Series Will Conclude After Season 3
The wildly popular Netflix series Squid Game, which captivated audiences upon its release in September 2021, will officially come to an end with its third season. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has made it clear that he does not intend to extend the series beyond this point.
The Journey Ahead: What to Expect in Seasons 2 and 3
Despite initially not having plans for additional seasons, Dong-hyuk ultimately decided to craft a storyline for two more installments. Season 2 is set to premiere on December 26, 2024, and from the sounds of it, this follow-up will lay the groundwork for the grand finale in Season 3.
Facing Pressure and Expectations
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dong-hyuk opened up about the pressure he felt following the immense success of Season 1. He acknowledged that, despite not initially planning for a second season, the enormous demand drove him to return to the storyline.
Gi-hun’s Emotional and Physical Journey
Although he lacked concrete plans, Dong-hyuk had a vision for the narrative arc, centering on Gi-hun, portrayed by Lee Jung-jae. He hinted that Seasons 2 and 3 would primarily explore Gi-hun’s quest to dismantle the deadly games once and for all.
“Throughout seasons two and three, you will follow Gi-hun’s journey—both physically and emotionally,” Dong-hyuk revealed during the interview.
The Final Chapter: A Natural Conclusion
Dong-hyuk stated that by the conclusion of Season 3, he will have conveyed everything he aimed to express through the Squid Game narrative. “As I contemplated the ending for Season 3, it became clear to me that this is the finale. We do not require further stories beyond this point,” he noted.
Anticipation for Season 3
Fans can expect Season 3 to debut sometime in 2025, with Dong-hyuk confirming that he is nearing the completion of the editing process.
