The creator of the globally acclaimed series Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has shared insights on the controversial casting of T.O.P. as Thanos in the show’s much-anticipated second season. Amidst the backdrop of T.O.P.’s past legal issues, Hwang is advocating for a more understanding audience response.
Thanos: A Complex Character
Thanos stands out as one of the most polarizing figures in Squid Game Season 2. His character is a whirlwind of eccentricity, humor, and dislikeability, often stirring chaos throughout the various challenges while delivering unexpected snippets of English dialogue. His role adds a unique dynamic to the already intense atmosphere of the series.
Controversial History of T.O.P.
Despite Netflix sharing promotional clips featuring T.O.P., his presence is notably absent from the platform’s South Korean social media channels. This omission stems from his previous drug scandal, where he received a 10-month prison sentence alongside a two-year suspension from mandatory military service due to marijuana use.
Hwang’s Defense of T.O.P.
In a recent interview with South Korea’s Sports Chosun, Hwang addressed the public’s concerns regarding T.O.P. He expressed his belief that the time that has elapsed since the actor’s incident—approximately six to seven years—should allow audiences to be more forgiving.
“I was surprised by the intensity of the reaction, but I couldn’t simply reject him outright,” said Hwang, as reported by CNA.
Let the Performance Speak
Hwang indicated that he chose to let T.O.P.’s performance in Squid Game speak for itself, emphasizing that public acceptance hinges on audience perceptions of his work. “The decision lies with the audience,” he asserted, highlighting the viewer’s role in shaping T.O.P.’s return to the public eye.
Thoughtful Casting Decisions
From the outset of the casting process, it became clear to Hwang that promoting T.O.P. would be a challenge. “We concluded early on that including him in promotional activities would be difficult. From the start, the plan was limited,” he remarked, stressing that he aimed to allow viewers to evaluate Thanos based on the final product rather than pre-release buzz.
Courage in Acting
In discussions with People, Hwang praised T.O.P.’s bravery in taking on a character that reflects both negative traits and similarities to his own life. “It must have taken a lot of guts to portray this character, especially with the shadows of his past,” he added, expressing satisfaction with the actor’s performance despite the lengthy hiatus.
As Squid Game Season 2 approaches its release, all eyes will be on how audiences will embrace or critique T.O.P. in this significant role.
