Director Hwang Dong-hyuk Discusses Controversies Surrounding “Squid Game 2″and T.O.P’s Casting
In a recent interview, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the acclaimed series “Squid Game,” shared insightful stories regarding the production of its much-anticipated sequel, “Squid Game 2.” One of the primary points of discussion was the casting decision involving Choi Seung-hyun, widely recognized as T.O.P from the iconic K-pop group BIGBANG. Hwang revealed that T.O.P will play the character of Thanos, a rapper grappling with personal struggles.
Challenges in the Casting Process
During the auditions, Hwang expressed his difficulty in finding the right actor for this pivotal role. “I auditioned numerous candidates but struggled to find one who truly fit,” he remarked. “When my team suggested Choi Seung-hyun, I was curious about his current involvement in acting.” The director initially had reservations, given the character’s background, which closely mirrored T.O.P’s own experiences. However, T.O.P surprised Hwang by expressing his willingness to take on the role after careful consideration.
T.O.P’s Comeback After Controversy
T.O.P’s involvement in “Squid Game 2” marks a significant return to acting after a lengthy hiatus of nine years. In 2016, the artist faced legal issues resulting in a 10-month prison sentence and two years of probation for cannabis use. The character Thanos, a troubled rapper with a drug addiction, reflects certain aspects of T.O.P’s real-life story, adding depth and complexity to the narrative.
Reactions to Casting Choices
Despite his initial optimism about casting T.O.P, Hwang was taken aback by the backlash that followed the announcement. “I didn’t anticipate that the criticism would persist,” he admitted. The director noted that he believed audiences would judge T.O.P based solely on his performance rather than his past. Unfortunately, harsh criticism flooded in as fans recalled T.O.P’s previous controversies, despite his long absence from the entertainment scene. “I felt it was important to give him a chance to show his acting merits,” Hwang explained.
The Narrative’s Significance
Hwang emphasized the significance of Thanos as a character within the broader context of the “Squid Game” storyline. He intended for this character to resonate with contemporary issues faced by younger audiences, particularly regarding drug use and online gambling. “I did not want to glorify these actions but rather incite reflection and discussion among viewers,” he stated, reiterating his positive intentions behind the casting decision.
Addressing Accusations of Favoritism
Amidst accusations of favoritism due to the large roster of actors from BH Entertainment, Hwang defended his casting decisions. He clarified that all actors, including major names like Lee Byung-hun and Park Sung-hoon, were selected based on their audition performances rather than their affiliations. “The principle guiding our casting process is solely rooted in acting ability,” he asserted.
Looking Towards the Future
With a significant budget of 100 billion won allocated for “Squid Game 2,” audience reactions have been mixed, leading to speculation about the forthcoming Season 3. Set for release in the first half of next year, Hwang is hopeful for its reception. “I’m excited about Season 3, as it encapsulates a richer, more dynamic narrative showcasing the true essence of humanity,” he concluded.
