The conclusion of Squid Game Season 2 presents a massive cliffhanger, highlighting an intense confrontation between the Front Man and Gi-hun. The response from fans has been overwhelmingly animated, yet unsurprising, given the show’s nature.
With only seven episodes in this season and just three games completed—including the intriguingly perilous Red Light, Green Light, the challenging Six-Legged Pentathlon, and the social dynamics of Mingle—viewers were left craving more. Additionally, Netflix has expressed that a third season is already underway, set for release in 2025, which promises to draw the narrative to a thrilling conclusion.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who have yet to witness the gripping finale of Squid Game Season 2!
Defending the “Bold” Ending of Squid Game Season 2
Season 2 culminates in a shocking and sobering climax: Player 001, well-known as the Front Man, resumes his grim duties following Gi-hun’s thwarted attempt to incite a rebellion against the guards. This tragic failure leads to the demise of Jung-bae and leaves the remaining players in disarray, surrounded by an ominous brigade of guards as the screen cuts to black—right before an intriguing post-credits scene unfolds.
This season’s ending offers no sense of closure, setting a bleak tone for the anticipated third installment. Key questions loom: Will Gi-hun be compelled to re-enter the perilous games, or will he be forced to witness the catastrophic fate of his fellow participants?
According to Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series creator, the finale arrived at “just the right moment.”Expressing his thoughts, he noted, “Of course, those watching would feel like, ‘Oh, no. What’s going to happen next? Give us the next episode right now.’ But I think that because, at that moment, Gi-hun loses everything, he fails all of his attempts, that is when he goes through yet another character transition. So, I thought that was the best place to end the season,” as he recounted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Lee Jung-jae, who portrays Gi-hun, shared initial disbelief, stating, “How could you end the season at that point?” He acknowledged that audiences would be eager to find out what happens next, remarking that some fans might even express frustration at the precarious cliffhanger. Yet, he recognizes a growing appreciation among viewers for bold narrative choices that thrill and provoke discussion.
Similarly, Lee Seo-hwan, the actor playing Jung-bae, expressed admiration for the cliffhanger, stating, “I actually really, really love that cliffhanger ending.” This sentiment reflects a broader trend in contemporary storytelling where suspense and unresolved plotlines prompt anticipation for future developments.
