Millions of viewers flocked to the streaming platform to indulge in the K-drama sensation. It comes as no surprise that a second season was quickly greenlit.
This highly anticipated K-drama sequel is among the most awaited releases for 2024, and we have all the vital information to get you pumped for Squid Game Season 2.
Release Date for Squid Game Season 2
Squid Game Season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26, 2024.
The announcement came earlier this year along with the release of the first teaser trailer. Netflix not only confirmed the release of Season 2 but also revealed that ‘The Final Season’ of the show is scheduled for 2025.
Squid Game quickly established itself as one of the biggest hits in Netflix history.
Netflix confirmed the 2024 release of Season 2 at the beginning of the year, although no specific date was provided. Lee recently shared with Business Insider that Squid Game “will be released in December.”
As noted by What’s on Netflix, filming for Squid Game’s second season was scheduled to commence in July 2023, lasting for approximately 10 months.
While Season 1 took Dong-hyuk a decade to write, fortunately, this season didn’t require as much time.
In earlier statements, Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos affirmed the return of the hit series, saying, “Absolutely. The Squid Game universe has just begun.”
Recent reports from OSEN revealed that filming for both Squid Game Season 2 and Season 3 has been completed, with the cast recently celebrating with a two-day wrap party. According to insiders, both seasons were filmed back-to-back, maintaining a continuous narrative.
With Season 2 expected to launch this year and Season 3 in 2025, fans won’t have to wait long between these installments. Season 2 will consist of six episodes, which is three fewer than the initial season, while Season 3 is projected to have six to seven episodes.
Cast of Squid Game Season 2
Lee Jung-Jae will return as Seong Gi-hun. Other returning cast members include Lee Byeong-Heon as Hwang In-ho, Wi Ha-Joon as Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo in the role of the participant recruiter.
While speaking to Deadline about the show’s return, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned he might “try something to bring back [dead characters] in Season 2.” This could include flashbacks or throwback episodes that take place before or during the initial season.
“So many characters died, especially the beloved ones. I apologize for eliminating them so easily; I didn’t anticipate this success,” he told Reuters. Hwang expressed a desire to “bring back Ji-young, but her best friend Sae-byeok also perished.”
Given the conclusion of Season 1, we anticipate a mostly new lineup in Season 2. Although it is unlikely, the director has also shown interest in casting Leonardo DiCaprio.
Additionally, several new faces have been cast for the second season, including Kang Ha-Neul, Yim Si-Wan, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun.
On June 29, 2023, eight new cast members were confirmed: Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an are all set to join the cast for Squid Game Season 2.
This new installment will also introduce a boyfriend for Young-hee, the infamous animatronic doll from the Red Light, Green Light game, with the voice for Cheoul-su yet to be announced.

Plot of Squid Game Season 2
Squid Game Season 2 will follow Seong Gi-hun as he seeks to dismantle the organization behind the brutal competition. The narrative will explore the repercussions of Gi-hun’s decision to stay in Korea instead of reuniting with his daughter in the United States.
While the first teaser didn’t reveal too much, a detailed press release provided some insights regarding the season’s events.
Taking place three years after Season 1, aligning with the real-world timeline, Player 456, Seong Gi-hun “remains determined to uncover the identity of those behind the game and bring their ruthless sport to an end.”

After initially searching for “the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway,” Gi-hun’s pursuit eventually draws him back into the deadly competition. “To end the game, he must re-enter it.”
Gi-hun is set to face off against the enigmatic ‘Front Man’ in more significant confrontations than ever, with their rivalry extending through Season 2 and into the anticipated third season, as confirmed by Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk.
