Squid Game quickly became one of the biggest hits in Netflix history.

At the beginning of the year, Netflix officially announced that Season 2 of Squid Game would be released in 2024, although an exact date was not specified. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Lee discussed his involvement in the upcoming Star Wars series The Acolyte and also mentioned that Squid Game is scheduled to premiere in December.

As reported by What’s on Netflix, production for the second season of Squid Game was scheduled to begin in July 2023 and last for 10 months.

Fortunately, this season didn’t take Dong-hyuk as long as 10 years, as was reported for Season 1.

When questioned at an early stage, Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO and Chief Content Officer of Netflix, did confirm that the popular series will be coming back, stating, “Without a doubt. The Squid Game world has only just begun.”

According to a recent report by OSEN, filming for both Season 2 and Season 3 of Squid Game has been completed, and the cast celebrated with a two-day wrap party. An inside source revealed that the two seasons were filmed consecutively with a continuous storyline, a detail that was later confirmed by Netflix.

With the release of Season 2 scheduled for this year and Season 3 planned for 2025, fans won’t have to wait long for the next installment. Reports indicate that Season 2 will have six episodes, three fewer than the first season, while Season 3 is expected to have six to seven episodes as well.

When speaking with Deadline about the potential return, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted at the possibility of bringing back deceased characters in Season 2 through various methods such as flashbacks or episodes set before or during the events of the first season.

“The deaths of numerous characters, including beloved ones, were a major theme. The director expressed regret for easily killing them off, unaware of the outcome. Hwang also has a desire to bring back Ji-young, but is faced with the obstacle of her best friend Sae-byeok also being deceased.”

Despite the conclusion of Season 1, we anticipate a mostly new cast for Season 2. Although it is unlikely, the director has shown desire to cast Leonardo DiCaprio for the show.

The second season has expanded its cast to include more actors in unspecified roles, introducing Kang Ha-Neul, Yim Si-Wan, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun to the lineup of unfamiliar faces.

What can we expect in the second season of Squid Game?

The second season of Squid Game will continue to focus on Seong Gi-hun’s quest to bring down the organizers of the deadly game. In addition, it will explore the consequences of Gi-hun’s decision to stay in Korea instead of reuniting with his daughter in the US.

Despite the initial teaser being vague, an accompanying press release provided details about the events of Season 2 and what is to come in the future.

Three years have passed since Season 1, following the same timeline as in reality. Despite the passage of time, Player 456, Seong Gi-hun, remains unwavering in his determination to uncover the masterminds behind the game and bring their cruel game to an end.

Despite initially searching for “the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway,” Gi-hun ultimately finds himself back in the deadly competition. In order to put an end to the game, he must re-enter it.

According to Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, the rivalry between Gi-hun and the enigmatic ‘Front Man’ will escalate further in Season 2 and continue into the third and final season.

Is there a trailer?

On February 1, 2024, Netflix released a sneak peek of Season 2 of Squid Game, featuring the return of Gi-hun and official images.

The initial glimpse of Gi-hun occurs following the conclusion of the first season, as he is at an airport. He receives a call, possibly from the Front Man, warning him of potential remorse for his actions. However, Gi-hun assures him that he will stop at nothing to track him down.

Upon initial viewing of the K-drama, it becomes apparent that Gi-hun has ditched his red hair and is once again confronting the Salesman. Additionally, viewers are introduced to a fresh face, portrayed by Park Gyu-young from the hit series Sweet Home.

On July 31, 2023, fans worldwide eagerly watched the first official trailer for Season 2 of Squid Game. Although short, it may not even feature actual footage from the show and could simply be promotional material. However, fans were excited to see the return of familiar characters and the iconic Red Light, Green Light game.

As of now, this is all the information we have on Squid Game Season 2. You can also anticipate upcoming Netflix releases such as Stranger Things Season 5, Virgin River Season 6, and Wednesday Season 2.
