The series takes place nine years after the battle of Yavin, making it five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and beginning around the same time as the first season of The Mandalorian. Despite concerns that the show may cater more towards a younger audience, creator Jon Watts has made it clear that this will not be a children’s program.

The show’s creator, John Watts, shared in a recent interview that the development of this series has been a lengthy process. The plot follows a group of 10-year-old children from a small planet who find themselves stranded in the vast Star Wars universe, as they embark on a journey to return to their home.

The duration of the miniseries was revealed in May 2023 through a recent WGA listing, stating that Skeleton Crew will have a total of eight episodes, a typical length for a Star Wars series.
