The futuristic Starfield universe has many tragic stories, but the community believes that the game’s treatment of dogs is its “saddest”and “most unrealistic”part.
Starfield, like Bethesda’s other major franchises, has rich and detailed lore. From the conflict that separates its two main factions to the reasons behind Earth’s transformation into a barren wasteland, the sci-fi RPG offers plenty of context to set up its narrative.
However, Starfield lore is not immune to some inconsistencies. Players have pointed out many such details since its release, such as the lack of explanation regarding the fate of people from specific backgrounds and ethnicities.
Another element of lore that hasn’t been fully developed is the lack of pets like dogs and cats. In fact, no animals native to Earth are present in the game. This suggests that these species perished after the collapse of Earth’s atmosphere.
And in fact, a player discovered a surprising detail regarding dogs in Starfield.
Starfield player discovers ‘sad’ information about dogs
User Serafim42 shared his discovery on Reddit. The title of his post was clear: “This is the saddest thing I’ve found so far.” It refers to the description of an item in Starfield which indicates that Labrador Retrievers are now an extinct breed. This information was a blow to the community.

In the comments, players were disappointed. One fan said: “The most unrealistic part of Starfield. No one would abandon their pets like that.”
They were not alone in refusing the explanation. Indeed, another user said: “It’s just an inconsistency in the world building. I mean, they have fully functional cloning technology (and then some). There’s no way they lost the DNA of all the dogs and cats.”
Some users also tried to defend the game. “Most likely, it wouldn’t have been a choice. Considering the small size of human settlements in this universe, the evacuation of Earth was likely a government-led effort that had no chance of saving everyone, so the priority was only humans.
But these explanations seemed to fall on deaf ears. In fact, the majority felt that their absence was due to an oversight on the part of the developers. “Of all the poorly written stories in Starfield, no humans taking their dogs while fleeing Earth is the worst.”
Bethesda’s previous titles have made sure to have dogs and cats, with the Fallout games even having a canine companion named Canigou. So, the absence of these animals in Starfield came as a surprise to many players.
It remains to be seen whether the developers will consider adding them to the game in the future. And there is always a chance that a mod can make many fans’ dream come true. Yes, the arrival of Creation Kit 2 is now imminent.
