Starfield players furious over ‘dismal’ spacesuits

Starfield features a variety of systems and mechanics that enrich the sci-fi RPG. But players have deemed one of these systems “incredibly bad” and are calling on the developers to overhaul it.

Beneath its space appearance, Starfield is a faithful Bethesda RPG at heart. This means that the game incorporates many of the studio’s associated systems, including NPCs, romance and affinity mechanics, outpost construction, skill trees, and more.

With Starfield, Bethesda also focused on procedural generation. Another system at play that seems to have received particular attention is that of resistances and affections.

Previous Bethesda games like Fallout 4 featured Radiation status effects that could stack up and make the player sick. The system has been expanded for Starfield, as exploring different planets will quickly inflict environmental damage and eventually turn into a real ailment like Heat Stroke or Frostbite.

A mechanic like this seems entirely appropriate in a game that encourages planetary exploration. Unfortunately, some players are dissatisfied with its implementation.

Starfield players find environmental resistances ‘incredibly bad’ and need improvement

A Reddit post from user u/HighwayNo9702 sparked a discussion on the topic. In this post, the player criticized the mechanic, saying: “All this environmental resistance crap needs to be reworked because it’s incredibly bad, air damage and even corrosive damage needs to go.”

Users have spoken out in the comments. One questioned the logic behind it: “Yeah, getting a lung infection on a planet with a sandstorm that doesn’t have oxygen in my spacesuit is pretty pathetic.”

Another user also made the same point, but with a different example, “I was on a planet where it was -32 C, and a little foggy. My wetsuit protection lasted a minute. THE MOMENT she disappeared, I got frostbite. Then I was hit with hypothermia shortly after.”

He continued: “I personally lasted much longer in this kind of real cold, without any sort of special spacesuit. So why can’t my futuristic spacesuit protect me better than a modern jacket could? “.

The main complaint seemed to be the lack of strength offered by the spacesuits, which users considered “unrealistic.”They also provided several examples where status effects simply didn’t make sense.

Players are therefore demanding a complete overhaul of the system. But it is not known, at this time, whether Bethesda will respond to these complaints regarding Starfield.
