The first story expansion that Bethesda has in store for Starfield is titled Shattered Space. Here’s everything we currently know about it.
Before the release of Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios announced plans for a paid story expansion – Shattered Space. Access to the DLC will be included with the RPG’s Premium Edition, Premium Edition Upgrade (both digital and physical), and Constellation Edition.
Information regarding the eagerly awaited expansion was limited until the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, which presented the inaugural trailer for Shattered Space and unveiled details about its storyline.

The first trailer for Starfield: Shattered Space premiered during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 9, 2024. The trailer sets an eerie atmosphere, featuring striking visuals and foreboding effects while confirming that the storyline ties back to the enigmatic House Va’Ruun.
Release Date for Starfield’s DLC
Yes, Bethesda confirmed that Shattered Space will be available on September 30, 2024, during the Gamescom Opening Night Live.
Director Todd Howard previously mentioned in an April 2024 interview with Kinda Funny that the expansion would launch in the fall, and the team has adhered to this timeline throughout the project’s development.
The Gamescom event also showcased a new teaser for Shattered Space, featured at the end of the trailer for upcoming vehicles.
Cost of Shattered Space
Players who bought the Digital Premium Edition of Starfield for $99.99 will automatically gain access to the expansion upon its release. For those who plan to purchase the DLC separately, it will be priced at $29.99.
New Content in Shattered Space
In a post celebrating the game’s first anniversary, Bethesda Game Studios announced that the Va’ruun’kai planet will feature over 50 new locations for exploration.
New adversaries such as the Redeemed and Vortex Horrors will make their debut in the expansion. Players will also have the ability to craft new grenades using collected organic materials.
Bethesda has described these grenades as “gross,” although specifics remain unclear – possibly drawing inspiration from similar items in Death Stranding, which were made from the main character Sam’s bodily fluids.
Story Details for Shattered Space DLC
The initial Shattered Space trailer confirms that the narrative centers on House Va’Ruun, a theocracy located in the Settled Systems that venerates a deity known as the Great Serpent. This belief system is one of the choices players encounter during character creation in Starfield, although the base game provides limited insight into the organization.
Importantly, the new story content will guide players to Dazra, a city on House Va’Ruun’s concealed homeworld, where they will investigate a cosmic threat.
A blog post from Bethesda accompanying the trailer states: “When a distress signal from a derelict star station leads you to Va’ruun’kai, you will start uncovering the secrets surrounding the followers of the Great Serpent.”
The trailer also indicates that “unique weapons, spacesuits, and gear” will be introduced in the DLC, although details are still forthcoming.
A preview on Xbox Wire describes Shattered Space as expanding on expectations by venturing into new genres. Players should thus expect a “horror-inflected mystery story” that delves deeper into the questions surrounding the base game’s House Va’Ruun faction.
The in-game exploration of humanity’s quest for knowledge will juxtapose with the new DLC’s examination of the consequences when that pursuit exceeds certain bounds.
Reports suggest that an experiment backfires around two weeks before players respond to the distress signal, leading to parts of the planet being cut off from gravitational anomalies referred to as Vortexes.
Additionally, the leader of the Va’Ruun sect has vanished, resulting in a power struggle amongst internal factions. To compound these issues, monstrous entities from another dimension have breached into this reality, presenting yet another challenge that players will need to address.
Players will also be initiated into Va’Ruun society, where they will navigate the increasingly treacherous conditions.
