Steam Deck 2 Rumors Addressed by Valve Developer Following AMD Announcement

Recent discussions surrounding AMD’s newly introduced Ryzen Z2 chips have ignited speculation about the anticipated Steam Deck 2, a subject that a Valve developer has swiftly addressed.

While Valve has previously announced intentions to develop a successor to the Steam Deck, specific details regarding hardware enhancements remain undisclosed. It’s essential to understand that a substantial upgrade will likely not hit the market for a few years. Nonetheless, a pre-recorded presentation from AMD, unveiling its Ryzen Z2 chips, inadvertently hinted at the potential specifications of a future Steam Deck model.

As reported by The Verge, AMD announced three new Ryzen Z2 chips designed for handheld gaming platforms. Sources indicated in the briefing that the Steam Deck, along with devices such as the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, would benefit from these advanced APUs.

Valve’s Response: No Z2 Steam Deck Planned

Following a leak from VideoCardz prior to AMD’s official announcement, excitement surged regarding the possibility of a Steam Deck powered by Ryzen Z2 technology. However, Valve quickly intervened to set the record straight.

In a recent post on his BlueSky account, Steam Deck developer Pierre-Loup Griffais made it clear, stating, “There is and will be no Z2 Steam Deck.” This statement aimed to dispel rumors sparked by a misleading presentation slide that seemed to imply otherwise.

Griffais emphasized that the slide was “meant to say the series is [intended] for products like that, not announcing anything specific.”

Despite Griffais’s public clarification, representatives from AMD refrained from directly addressing the rumors when questioned. Instead, they explained that the slide was intended to showcase “current handheld design wins”rather than preemptively announcing upcoming handheld devices.

As it stands, without concrete information from Valve regarding the future of the Steam Deck, it remains uncertain what innovations the next iteration will feature. Enthusiasts will need to wait for official updates to gain insight into the next chapter of Valve’s gaming hardware.
