Steam Deck hit by bootlooping and Decky plug-ins

The most recent edition of DeckyLoader, an add-on for Steam Deck, is wreaking havoc on plug-ins and has resulted in one being completely removed from the platform.

Despite the recent release of the Jackbox Megapicker game launcher on the Steam Deck, it has not been the most successful time for the handheld. Unfortunately, the installation of the game caused some systems to completely malfunction and even after attempts to fix the issue, certain Steam Decks remained unable to boot up.

Upon being noticed by GamingOnLinux, it appears that while the issues with the game launcher have been resolved, further problems have arisen. The most recent iteration of Decky Loader is causing its own complications, leading to a boot loop error and the removal of a plug-in from the list.

One of the causes of boot loop errors in Steam Deck’s gaming mode is Music Control, a plugin created by Decky.

Several Steam Deck users have experienced issues since the pre-release of the latest version of Decky. According to Train, the developer of Decky Loader, these errors have led to the removal of the music plug-in from Decky and users are advised to uninstall it.

According to GamingOnLinux, Train announced on the official Decky Loader Discord channel that Music Control appears to be the cause of boot loop issues. However, other users have reported experiencing the same problem even without the plug-in installed.

Therefore, Train advises users to “manually remove one plugin at a time to identify which plugin is causing issues”if they are currently using the most recent pre-release version of the add-on.

The Decky developer advises that any plugins in ~/homebrew/plugins/ must be removed and a sudo password will be necessary for proper deletion of the files.

Every affected Decky Loader plugin known so far

If you are currently utilizing the table branch of Decky, there should be no issues. These continuous boot loop errors are only impacting plugins that are paired with the most recent pre-release version.

Despite this, a Deckty Loader Discord user has taken the initiative to compile a list of plugins that may be affected. This will make it simpler to determine which ones should be avoided or deleted.

At the time of writing, the following plugins are impacted:

  • DeckRoulette 1.1.3-0950f29
  • GameView Music 1.1.0-1
  • MicroSDeck 0.9.1-1 (see list below)
  • MusicControl 1.1.5 (see list below)
  • Network Info 1.0.1-13b914b
  • Remote Play Whatever 1.0.0
