Despite years of being delayed in development, Stephen King’s highly anticipated vampire film, Salem’s Lot, finally has a tentative premiere date in sight.
Fans of horror movies now have another film to look forward to as a new adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot novel has announced its premiere date.
In April 2019, New Line Cinema, the studio behind King’s work, initially announced that production for Salem’s Lot had begun. Filming kicked off in September 2021, but due to the requirement for extra photography, it concluded in late May or early June 2022.
Until August 23, 2024, when the streaming service Max confirmed the release of Salem’s Lot in October 2024, no other news had been announced about the movie. However, a specific premiere date has not yet been determined.
Despite originally being scheduled for release on September 9, 2022, the movie was caught in a state of limbo for an extended period of time. Due to the Hollywood industry’s reshuffling of releases following the global shutdown, it was pushed back to April 21, 2023.
In October 2023, Warner Bros. revealed that Salem’s Lot would not be released in theaters, but rather would be available for streaming through their streaming service as a response to the increasing demand for content on Max.
With the new year of 2024 approaching and still no premiere date in sight, King himself took to Twitter in February to address the movie’s shelved state. He shared that he had seen the new SALEM’S LOT and praised its old-school horror filmmaking style, with a slow build and big payoff. King expressed confusion as to why WB was holding back the movie, stating that it was not at all embarrassing. He ended by remarking, “Who knows. I just write the f**king things.”
Despite its scheduled release on Max, Salem’s Lot will still be available for viewing in theaters in the United Kingdom and Ireland beginning on October 11, 2024.
There’s a possibility that Max may release the movie on the same weekend as its international premiere, but they might not want to clash with the release of Terrifier 3, which is also scheduled for the same day.
Due to the eerie storylines in his films, King’s movies are typically released during the month of Halloween. It would be unexpected if the studio chose to go against this tradition.
