Stephen King has highly praised a popular Netflix series, which has received an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. He described it as “one of the greatest things he has ever watched”on television.
King frequently expresses his opinions on TV shows and movies he has viewed; as recently as last year, he praised The Flash as “exceptional”and praised its “genuine, humorous, and visually stunning”qualities. Additionally, he denounced the negative reception from “fanboy”critics towards The Marvels.
The author has recently published a review of Baby Reindeer in The Times, drawing comparisons between Richard Gadd’s popular series and Misery.
The author shares that he was encouraged by a friend to watch the film, who claimed it would make his book “Misery”and its corresponding movie seem like a children’s cartoon in comparison.
BABY REINDEER: Holy shit.
— Stephen King (@StephenKing) April 26, 2024
Both Baby Reindeer and King’s story share a common theme: a protagonist who becomes the target of a dangerous obsession. In Baby Reindeer, Donny (Gadd) is stalked by Martha (Jessica Gunning) after meeting her in a pub. Similarly, in King’s tale, Paul Sheldon (played by James Caan in the 1990 film) is rescued by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) after a car crash, only to discover that she is his biggest fan and never wants him to leave.
King continued to express his admiration for the show, stating that he was completely engrossed and could not tear his eyes away. He also compared the episodes of Baby Reindeer, which are approximately 30 minutes in length, to quick and precise jabs from a sharp knife.
Donny’s performance of his comedy routine on stage in Episode 6 received special recognition, with credit given to him by others, after Martha’s assault on him.
“In the incredibly powerful second-to-last episode, he abandons his comedic facade and shares with the audience the truth of his experience, including the harrowing and explicit details of his sexual assault by another man. The emotional battle between Donny’s self-hatred and self-worth in this monologue is what makes the sixth episode of Baby Reindeer truly exceptional and one of the most outstanding pieces of television (or cinema) I have ever witnessed,”King commented.
Baby Reindeer is currently maintaining a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and continues to hold its top position on Netflix’s global top chart. You can browse through a list of 10 recommended movies and TV shows to watch next, and also find out if there are plans for a second season of Baby Reindeer.
