As Stranger Things concludes its final season, star Gaten Matarazzo has suggested that a potential spinoff may explore the characters’ lives decades into the future.
The filming for Stranger Things Season 5 is nearing completion, marking the end of Netflix’s most prominent original series, which first premiered in 2016.
While fans prepare to bid farewell to their beloved characters from Hawkins, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have expressed a strong interest in extending the Stranger Things franchise with various spinoffs.
One of these potential spinoffs could follow Dustin’s journey into adulthood, as Matarazzo shared with RadioTimes, “I would love to see, potentially, if there’s a continuation of Dustin after [Season] 5, if any of us make it up to that point. I would love to see what would happen, what Dustin would be like as a 30-year-old. It could be a lot of fun.”
He added, “I’d be interested in seeing what their concept would be, but yeah, I’m absolutely open to anything.”
It’s possible that Matarazzo is teasing his character’s fate for the upcoming season, given the significant risk some major characters face in the series finale.
In the last episode, Max Mayfield was left in a coma, critically injured after a confrontation with the series’ main villain, Vecna.
As the final season unfolds, the group must strive to save both Hawkins and the world from the horrors of the Upside Down, which may lead to significant character losses.
Millie Bobby Brown, known for her role as Eleven, has been outspoken about her belief that the show should take more risks, suggesting in a May 2022 interview, “We need to have the mindset of Game of Thrones. Kill me off!” She expressed frustration about character returns, noting, “The Duffer Brothers are sensitive Sallies who don’t want to kill anybody off.”
In response, Matt Ross addressed Brown’s comments in a July 2022 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, clarifying that all character deaths up until Season 5 served a “thematic” and “narrative purpose” rather than being plot devices.
With the fate of the beloved group of teens still uncertain, the prospects of a Dustin-centered spinoff may be unclear.
Fans need not despair about a disappointing conclusion for Dustin’s character, as Matarazzo reassured listeners, “It definitely will be a bookend. I think it will wrap up really nicely.”
“And I don’t think Matt Ross will want to approach anything like that for a long time. So if you were to ask me a year from now if I wanted to come back, I’d probably be like, ‘I’m gonna do some other stuff for a bit initially,’ but who knows what it’s going to be like.”
