As fans eagerly await the release of Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1 on Netflix, the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have been actively dispelling speculation surrounding the show’s conclusion. With just one month left until the premiere, their interviews reveal crucial insights into what viewers can expect.
The journey to the final chapter in Hawkins has been lengthy, with significant production delays extending the wait since the fourth season, which premiered back in May 2022. This prolonged anticipation has sparked numerous fan theories, and it’s evident that the Duffer brothers are aware of the fervor surrounding their beloved series.
Season 5 will be divided into three segments: the first part debuts in November 2025, followed by the second in December, and the series finale is set for a dramatic New Year’s Eve release, marking the end of the franchise.
Addressing Speculation on the Season 5 Finale Runtime
In a recent interview with Variety, Matt Duffer emphasized that the rumored runtimes circulating online for the finale are incorrect. He stated, “Every runtime I’ve seen for the Stranger Things Season 5 finale posted online is inaccurate.”
The lengthy gap between Seasons 4 and 5 has undoubtedly intensified speculation among dedicated fans. Expert analysis of every clue has led to exciting conversations, especially following comments made by Maya Hawke, who plays Robin. In a previous appearance on Podcrushed, she described Season 5 as akin to creating “eight movies.”
This remark spurred theories that suggested episodes could run between 90 and 120 minutes, while the finale might stretch to a staggering three hours. Discussions on platforms like Reddit reflect these notions, with fans eagerly estimating that “Episodes 1-7 will be normal length, but the final episode could be very lengthy, possibly around 2.5 hours.”
Despite the fervent speculation by fans, the Duffer brothers assert that many of these estimates are “inaccurate.” Nevertheless, they have hinted that the finale will indeed be longer than the standard episode length, aligning with the idea that “Episode 4 and Episode 8 are like movies, ”according to Matt Duffer.
Future Projects: Duffer Brothers’ Transition to Paramount
During their interview, the Duffer brothers also discussed their upcoming transition to Paramount. In August 2025, they signed an exclusive four-year agreement with the studio, which will come into effect in April 2026, following the conclusion of their current Netflix contract.
Under this new deal, their production company, Upside Down Pictures, aims to develop a variety of projects, including films and shows, while maintaining some responsibilities for Netflix, such as the animated spinoff Tales From ’85.
While the Duffers have plans for original films, they remain open to adapting existing intellectual properties that resonate with them. They also intend to focus on creating series with more condensed seasons, typically comprising “eight-to-10 episodes, ” as opposed to the lengthy formats often seen in network television.
Matt Duffer has voiced his preference for shorter seasons, expressing that “watching 20-episode seasons can be tiring” and that he prefers the buildup associated with less frequent releases.
