Despite the delay in the release of Stranger Things Season 5 on Netflix, fans are already speculating about Will’s potential villainous role thanks to spoilers and sneak peeks of the upcoming season.
Ever since his introduction in the Stranger Things universe, Will Byers has played a pivotal role due to his ties to the Upside Down and Vecna. In Season 4, the main characters believed they had vanquished Vecna and were able to find some semblance of tranquility.
Despite a video of the cast filming Season 5 and a fan sighting, it seems likely that Will may take on the role of D&D villain Acererak. The initial speculation stemmed from a video posted on X/Twitter of the cast shooting a tense scene at the new Radio Station.
According to a tweet accompanied by a video footage, the cast of #StrangerThings5 was seen shooting a major action scene at the recently built Radio Station set this week. The night shoot reportedly included fighting noises and multiple screams, with someone shouting, “Steve, you need to RUN!”
The person yelling in agony was widely believed to be Will, as their voice sounded similar. This sparked a frenzy of theories that Will could transform into Acererak in Stranger Things Season 5. But how could this be possible?
A fan who had witnessed a person on set wearing a costume with “squiggly vine-like horns” shared their experience online. Another fan speculated that this could be a nod to the original depiction of Vecna, and shared a drawing made by the witness as a reminder. However, they cautioned that this may not necessarily confirm Vecna’s appearance in the show.

However, the speculation leads to an even more terrifying realization than Vecna. “So this is likely one of the main antagonists in Season 5 of Stranger Things, Acererak, a being capable of traversing multiple universes,”commented one fan on Twitter.
Based on D&D mythology, he is a formidable sorcerer who transforms into a lich and demilich, journeying through the various planes in search of mystical relics. Referred to as The Devourer, Lord of Unlife, and Acererak of the Scarlet Robes, he possesses the power to manipulate the undead. Rumor has it that he was once an understudy of Vecna.
Will’s journey will ultimately come full circle, as he continues to be linked to the Upside Down. It is possible that Will’s natural connection to this otherworldly realm will make him vulnerable to manipulation by Vecna, despite his resistance. In fact, one fan expressed their admiration for Will’s character by declaring, “Even as Acererak, he still prioritizes the safety of others. That’s just so Will and I love him.”Perhaps, the hints for this plot twist have been subtly dropped throughout Stranger Things Season 4.
A social media user observed, “HOLY- THAT’S NOT VECNA THAT’S ACERERAK I’M SCREAMING.”During Season 4, Eddie Munson unveils a spellcaster in a D&D session by slamming down a figurine, which could potentially be Acererak instead of Vecna.
Additionally, when the episode titles for Season 5 were announced, a fan pointed out that Episode 4, titled “Sorcerer,”could potentially revolve around Will. The fan questioned if this meant Will had hidden powers, as seen in their tweet: “SORCERER- WILL HAS HIDDEN POWERS?”
Despite much speculation and anticipation for Eddie to reprise his role as Kas, Vecna’s vampire minion, it appears that Will may instead be the one with the potential to vanquish Vecna. This information is supported by various signs and hints.
