The season finale of ‘Sugar’ premiered on Apple TV+ on May 17, 2024. In the final episode, John Sugar (Colin Farrell) discovers Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler) in the basement of Ryan Pavich’s (Cameron Cowperthwaite) home. The series continues from this point.
John discovers Olivia, among other girls, in the basement where they were all being tortured. In addition, he also uncovers Pavich’s recordings on CDs, in which he confesses to his actions.
As John and Ruby (Kirby) get ready to depart the planet, Ruby confesses to John that she had been aware of Pavich’s involvement all along, but was unable to divulge this information to him. Meanwhile, Miller, who had already left, is shot by a police officer. Ruby informs John that they must leave on the same day.
During his visit with the Siegel family, John receives an offer from Jonathan to become the head of security. However, he declines the offer. While discussing with Jonathan, John subtly mentions the possibility of Olivia being Jonathan’s daughter, but he chooses not to pursue this topic further out of consideration for Olivia and her past experiences.
Despite this, Sugar believes that Pavich had some involvement with another individual and that there is more to the situation than initially thought. Will Sugar be able to unravel the mystery before departing from the planet?
Does John Sugar tell Melanie his secret?
John and Melanie (played by Amy Ryan) have developed a strong bond during John’s search for Olivia. Melanie has become a trusted confidante for John, but he is unsure of where their relationship stands.
For the last time, he meets with Melanie before departing and shares with her the story of his sister Djen’s (Maeve Whalen) disappearance. As he prepares to leave, he pauses to grasp Melanie’s hand and silently conveys some information, causing both of their eyes to turn blue.
John releases a sigh of relief, possibly having revealed his identity to her. In his internal dialogue, he acknowledges that he was not supposed to disclose this information, but he is content that he did.
2. Is Henry Involved with Ryan Pavich in Apple TV+ ‘Sugar’?
In the sixth episode, Jason Butler Harner’s character Henry played a crucial role in helping John Sugar after he was injured. However, it was later revealed that Henry was not only involved with Ryan Pavich, but also responsible for taking Djen.
John Sugar continuously plays the CDs he discovered at Pavich’s house and notices someone in the recording taking notes. He verifies with Olivia that there were indeed two individuals present in the basement. The line uttered by Ryan in the recording triggers a memory of something Henry had previously shared with him.
Why doesn’t Sugar go home?
Upon discovering the truth about Henry and his decision to stay on Earth, John ultimately chooses to remain on the planet despite his love and longing for his home. Ruby reveals that she had known about Henry’s involvement from the beginning.
John reveals that he is starting to experience a greater sense of humanity, encompassing all the emotions that are characteristic of human beings. He expresses his desire to remain in this place and continue his pursuit of Henry in order to uncover the truth about his sister.
4. What Can We Expect From Season 2?
John Sugar remaining on Earth could lead to a potential second season of the show, which would delve deeper into his adventures.
He informs Ruby that his main goal is to locate Henry and, ultimately, his younger sister. This will inevitably lead to a confrontation between the two former friends. As they have both evolved with human characteristics and inclinations, it is unlikely that either will resort to non-violent methods in the event of a fight.
Other than this main storyline, there will be no other elements from the first season that will carry over into season 2. In particular, the connections that Sugar formed in the previous eight episodes will not be featured in the second season, as he says goodbye to each of them.
Despite developing a strong connection with Melanie and revealing his true alien form to her in the end, the two will never reunite. Therefore, it is likely that John Sugar will forge new friendships and relationships in season 2, should it be released.
