In the fifth episode of Sugar, titled ‘Boy in the Corner’, the focus shifts to Davy Siegal and the aftermath of the major revelation in the previous episode.
The episode delves into Davy’s predicament – will he face responsibility, or will he utilize his influence and riches to once again evade the repercussions?
The episode delves deeper into Davy’s character, providing a tense confrontation for the first time. While the previous episode briefly strayed from the central mystery surrounding John Sugar’s secret, the ending hints at it once again.
1. How Sugar Episode 5 Ends
The conclusion of Sugar Episode 5 depicts a troubled Davy being convinced by his mother as he contemplates the triumph of his first album, ‘Boy in the Corner.’
“Despite Margit’s assurance that he will have the support of influential people and bounce back like a caring mother, the news has deeply shaken him and he is now haunted by the fear of how he will be perceived.”
Feeling guilty and burdened by Sugar’s last words, which suggested that he should have protected her instead of putting her in danger, he waits until his mother has gone to bed before retrieving one of the mini-revolvers he kept in the bathroom and taking his own life.
Bernie receives a call from Margit and rushes to the hospital with his only son, who is in a state of absolute panic. It is uncertain if Davy will survive the fatal shot, and since his character does not appear to be crucial to the story, he may not make it.
Will John tell his secret to Melanie?
In the last scene, we see Melanie heading to John’s hotel room following the incident at her own home. She settles onto the couch while John takes a shower, and then reflects on his outburst earlier in the day.
Despite his own lack of awareness, John is beginning to feel like his reactions to situations are becoming increasingly violent and uncertain.
The episode concludes with John, unable to fall asleep, joining Melanie on the couch and lying down next to her on the floor. He confides in her, sharing a secret that he cannot reveal to anyone else. Melanie comforts him, offering a listening ear.
Is John going to reveal his secret to Melanie? Does he have enough trust in her to confide in her about whatever has been troubling him? We are left with a few inquiries at the moment: who exactly is he? The answers to these questions are concealed within the enigma of Sugarland.
3. What is the reason for the presence of Stallings in Mexico?
In the previous episode, Stallings had informed his associates that he would be absent for a few days. When Davy mentioned this to John, he stated that Stallings would be back the following day. This raises the question: what is Stallings planning to do?
In a short scene, Stallings and his colleagues intercept a bus heading towards the US-Mexico border and apprehend all of the conventionally attractive girls. They are there to forcibly remove these girls from the bus and engage in human trafficking.
4. How did Davy know Stallings?
Despite John’s attempts to visit Davy’s place, Margit acts as a barrier, determined to shield her son from any potential issues. She is unwilling to let John speak with Davy, further demonstrating her unwavering support for her son’s choices.
Despite Margit’s concerns about the potential threat John poses to her son, Davy, who has been listening from the other room, is determined to talk to him.
In a first for the show, a visibly anxious Davy confesses to Sugar that he has committed wrongdoings. He attributes his actions to his fame and the constant attention from women. This situation is a textbook example of a perpetrator shifting the blame onto the victim for their own faults.
Despite this, John is not focused on discovering the motives behind Davy’s actions. Instead, his main goal is to uncover the connection between Olivia’s disappearance and Davy’s behavior. He directs his inquiries towards Olivia and we learn about his connection with Stallings.
5. About Olivia
During their conversation, John persistently inquired about Olivia’s whereabouts. After much prodding, Davy eventually confessed that he had asked Stallings to look after his half-sister when she continued to push for Taylor to stick to her story and expose Davy’s actions.
Once more, Davy attempted to conceal his actions by claiming that he only did them because his new movie was scheduled for release and the news could potentially damage his reputation. He proceeded to disclose Stallings’ address to John.
6. Who is Miller?
Ruby arrives at a remote destination to meet with Miller, a person she has previously referenced but has not yet met. It becomes apparent that Miller holds a higher position than Ruby and is likely in charge of the organization that John Sugar belongs to.
Ruby tells Miller that John is fully engrossed in his ongoing case. As he nears the end, John might require assistance in comprehending the motives behind the circumstances. Based on their discussion, it appears that Miller and the rest are cognizant of Stallings and are working to maintain a certain equilibrium by keeping John from intervening.
Ruby states that it is difficult to prevent John from involving himself in the case due to his strong moral principles that they struggle to understand. However, Miller directs Ruby to make sure John refrains from getting involved in the case and does not take it personally.
