Prior to his anticipated return to the music industry, Leeteuk of Super Junior jokingly made a request for forgiveness for Kangin during a public event.
Super Junior’s Ryeowook and former Tahiti member Ari tied the knot in a private wedding ceremony in Seoul on May 26th. Many of their colleagues, friends, and family shared videos and photos of the special day, revealing that the Super Junior original lineup was also in attendance. Former members Kangin, Han Geng, Kibum, and Henry were all present at the wedding.
Kangin drew the most attention when he announced through Dear U Bubble that he would be joining the fan-communicating platform on May 28. This has sparked speculations that the idol is planning to make a comeback to the entertainment industry after a long break.
At Ryeowook-Ari’s wedding, Leeteuk’s comment about Kangin caught people’s eye as it seemed to suggest his return before the official announcement.
During the wedding reception, Super Junior made the decision to surprise Ari and the guests by performing an updated version of their popular hit song “Sorry, Sorry”from 2024.
Despite Siwon’s absence from the performance, Super Junior continued with the 8-member version, which included Heechul, as he had to leave the wedding early due to a filming schedule.
Despite his late arrival, Kangin made an appearance and expressed his apologies. He drew laughter from the audience as he returned to his original position in the performance. However, the song had already concluded, prompting Eunhyuk and Leeteuk to playfully tease him and suggest that he return to his seat.
Despite the joyful ambiance, Leeteuk, the leader, addressed Kangin’s break from the group with an air of lightheartedness, eventually leading to his departure. He stated:
“You are meeting Kangin, who has spent more time self-reflecting than being active.”
Leeteuk pleaded with the people to forgive Kangin.
“I ask for your forgiveness. It was Kangin who had been active for only 5 years and was going through 15 years of self-reflection. Since it’s such a happy and good day, let’s embrace and love each other, so that Kangin can also make a living.”
Upon the dissemination of this clip on the internet, Korean ELFs responded with disapproval.
- “Wasn’t he constantly causing trouble?”
- “He was even a nuisance at someone else’s wedding.”
- “Isn’t he doing it because he deserved self-reflection?”
Despite this, international ELFs showed greater acceptance towards the idol and expressed their support for his future activities, keeping in mind his expected comeback.
Twice, Kangin, who was once part of Super Junior, sparked controversy after being caught driving under the influence.
In 2009, he was involved in a triple collision between two taxis. After the accident, he fled the scene but was later arrested and charged with hit-and-run while driving under the influence. Despite being booked, he was not detained.
After taking a temporary hiatus for self-reflection, he was welcomed back by ELFs who had decided to forgive him. He then resumed his activities with Super Junior following the completion of his military service.
Despite the fans’ trust being broken once again after he was booked and fined for a second drunk driving traffic accident in 2016, his image was further tarnished following an assault incident in 2017.
In July 2019, he departed from the group amid allegations of being involved in the “Burning Sun Gate”scandal. The scandal involved his friend Jung Joon Young, who was arrested for producing and sharing illegal video footage through a KakaoTalk group chat room.
