Before his death, Hax$ shared poignant thoughts on social media, expressing intense feelings of loss regarding his connection with the Melee community. In a tweet dated March 14, 2025, he wrote, “I miss the Melee community so much.” Just days later, on March 18, he lamented, “I need the Melee community back by my side. I miss my friends so much and can’t go on like this.”
His death has ignited a firestorm of discussion within the Melee community, with many blaming tournament organizers and fellow community members for upholding his permanent ban. This tumultuous backdrop adds complexity to the conversations surrounding his passing.
Reflections on Mental Health and Community Interaction
Reflecting on his traumatic experience, Hax$ had previously stated the motivations behind his August attempt: “It happened because I live with the pain of being separated from my community for the past 20 years… This was a rash decision, fueled by social isolation and depression, ” he noted in a December 2024 statement. He took accountability for his actions, affirming his commitment to personal improvement and mental health recovery through counseling.
Despite his struggles, Hax$ had not lacked support from within the Melee community. Pro player HungryBox had even flown to visit him in the hospital, only to learn of Hax$’s passing upon landing.
I wanted to keep it private but I just landed in New York not even 5 minutes ago to go visit Hax in the hospital. He passed away while I was in the air. I don’t know what to say. I wanted to say goodbye in person I’m so sorry Aziz. Please rest easy for us in heaven.

The Fallout from Hax$’s Ban
The controversy surrounding Hax$ is deeply intertwined with his ban from participating in Melee tournaments. His ban stemmed from several YouTube videos in which he criticized prominent community figure Leffen, leading to significant upheaval within the competitive scene. Although he later retracted the videos, the repercussions were severe. A ruling issued on January 28, 2024, detailed the reasons for his permanent exclusion, citing a lack of remorse for his actions and an inability to foster a respectful environment.
According to the statement from tournament organizers, “Hax’s actions have abused the privilege of participating in tournaments. He has demonstrated that he cannot be trusted to follow community guidelines.” The ruling was widely endorsed by major tournament organizers, effectively sidelining him from the majority of competitive events.
Hax$ had built a commendable career since entering the competitive landscape in 2008, playing as a Fox main and accumulating nearly $40, 000 in prize winnings. His story resonates with many, as Fox players are often regarded as some of the most skilled competitors in Melee history.
The outpouring of grief and frustration from fans and fellow professionals underscores a vital conversation about mental health awareness and the importance of inclusivity within gaming communities. Hax$’s life and death will likely serve as a pivotal moment for many in the Melee community.
