The Man of Steel will get a makeover in front of James Gunn’s camera, for the revival of the DC Universe – release date, casting, plot and other details, here is everything you need to know about the Superman: Legacy film.

First announced in December 2022, the new feature film about the iconic superhero will serve as an entry point to the overhaul of the DC Universe, formerly called DCEU for DC Extended Universe. And for the task, it was director James Gunn who rolled up his sleeves, with a long and successful experience in the genre but also his position as co-CEO of DC Studios.

The challenge of reintroducing such a character in theaters might seem excessive, but this is not the filmmaker’s first attempt: James Gunn gave hope to many Marvel fans with his Guardians of the Galaxy, and his Peacemaker series offers a welcome tone in the world of heroes in tights. Without forgetting Super, an extraordinary film which allowed the director to make his mark in the genre, standing out in the cinematic landscape of 2010.

Superman: Legacy has received a lot of attention since its announcement, and its director and his ambitions for the DCU are not the only ones to blame. Because the production, in addition to offering a new story of the iconic superhero, regularly releases information, making the spectators’ hype soar. Release date, set photos, plot, we tell you everything we know about Superman: Legacy.

Summary

Superman: Legacy release date

Superman: Legacy by James Gunn will be released in French theaters on July 9, 2025.

“James Gunn confirms that the release of Superman: Legacy will respect the initial announcement of July 11, 2025 [July 9 in France”

Its production had to deal with many obstacles. The actors’ and screenwriters’ strikes of 2023 have notably pushed back the schedules of the major studios by many months. But the blockbuster fared better than its competitors, and will maintain its release in July 2025.

Superman: Legacy plot – what will the film be about?

According to James Gunn’s numerous comments on social networks and the inspirations taken from the comics, we can already estimate that Superman: Legacy will tell the story of a younger Superman, while exploring the inner conflict in Clark Kent, the opposing his human and heroic versions.

Indeed, shortly after revealing the existence of Superman: Legacy, James Gunn confirmed on X/Twitter that the film would focus more on the superhero’s youth. The (young) man of steel will therefore differ greatly from the versions hitherto known to the public on the big screen.

As for the studios’ official synopsis, it was shared by The Hollywood Reporter as follows: “[The film] focuses on Superman as he seeks balance between his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American model. He is goodness, in a world that has decided that said goodness is no longer fashionable.”

James Gunn subsequently added details, explaining that the film would not be an origin story despite the hero’s youth. During a press conference (reported by Collider), the director affirmed that Clark Kent “is working” , and that he is even already “a reporter, at the Daily Planet.”

Superman: Legacy cast and crew – who will be involved in the film?

The cast of Superman: Legacy will be led by David Corenswet (The Politician) in the title role, but the star obviously won’t be alone. You can find the cast of the film below:

  • David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Kal/Superman
  • Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
  • Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor
  • Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
  • Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
  • Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific
  • Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern
  • Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho
  • María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica/The Engineer
  • Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher
  • Milly Alcock as Supergirl
  • Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord
  • Wendell Pierce as Perry White

David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have been announced as the main actors in the cast of Superman: Legacy in June 2023. The former is best known for his role in the Netflix series The Politician and Ti West’s horror film, Pearl. For her part, Rachel Brosnahan received widespread praise for her role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Prime Video.

Other information about the casting has been slowly revealed since then, either directly by James Gunn or via specialized media. Among the announced supporting roles, the most notable include Nicholas Hoult as Superman’s enemy Lex Luthor and Skyler Gisondo as young Daily Planet reporter Jimmy Olsen.

Sasha Calle, known for her incarnation of Supergirl in The Flash, will not reprise her role in Superman: Legacy. Rather, the film will introduce a new Supergirl into the new DCU. Indeed, in January 2024, the announcement of a replacement for the superheroine by Deadline highlighted Milly Alcock, star of House of the Dragon.

In February, the actors reportedly participated in a reading of the script:

“SUPERMAN: LEGACY set to be read this week in Atlanta”

As for the team, James Gunn will combine the hats: as co-CEO of DC Studios, he will oversee the beginnings of the DCU thanks to the film he is directing. But the filmmaker will not only manage the filming, since he also wrote the screenplay for Superman: Legacy.

As for the music, James Gunn renews his collaboration with John Murphy, already composer (among many other creations) of the scores of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 or The Suicide Squad.

Is there a trailer for Superman: Legacy?

Superman: Legacy just started filming in March 2024, so there’s no trailer available yet.

However, photos from the set provided a glimpse of some locations in James Gunn’s film.

“First look from the set of James Gunn’s Superman Legacy / “We shot the first scenes, the ones where Superman flees to the Fortress of Solitude”

Is Superman: Legacy connected to the DCEU?

No, Superman: Legacy is a new iteration of Superman and will have no connection with Henry Cavill’s interpretation of the Man of Steel or the other heroes of the DCEU, who can now be considered as belonging to the past.

While some fans may feel sad at having to turn the page, the future is still far from gloomy: James Gunn has been recruited to write a new DC chapter in cinema, thus creating the brand new DCU (DC Universe).

Superman: Legacy will kick off a list of next big films from the famous comics.
