The reworked weapon that was once overlooked in Destiny 2 has now become a force to be reckoned with, offering devastating burst damage and exceptional synergy with melee builds.
Despite the emergence of new and powerful weapons like Prismatic and meta Exotics, such as Still Hunt, Guardians have shifted their focus away from Destiny’s older weapons. However, this may prove to be a mistake, as the recent Bastion rework in The Final Shape has elevated an often overlooked Exotic into one of the top choices for delivering high amounts of burst damage.
After the recent changes, Saint’s Fists now grant Bastion a 45% damage increase for 7 seconds after landing a melee hit. This is especially impactful since Bastion was already a formidable Fusion Rifle. Additionally, Bastion’s ability to intrinsically stun Unstoppable Champions makes it even more valuable and versatile.
In addition to this, hitting the majority of pellets in a burst also enhances melee damage by as much as 150%, effectively creating a fusion of One-Two Punch and Trench Barrel – two exceptionally formidable damage perks – within Saint’s Fist.
The effectiveness of this combination was not lost on Destiny veteran Datto, who was pleasantly surprised by the improvements made to the Exotic weapon Bastion. After testing it, he remarked, “Bastion is actually something that caught me off guard,”and suggested that it now synergizes well with melee-focused setups. This is especially enticing considering the prevalence of meta builds in Echoes Act 2.
Bastion now stands as one of the top weapons for melee builds, thanks to its two powerful melee damage perks in one. It ranks alongside other formidable options such as Tractor Cannon, Breachlight, and any shotgun with One-Two Punch. This makes Bastion a truly top-tier choice for players.
Bastion’s true strength shines when it is paired with Synthoceps or Liar’s Mask. By combining the damage boosts of both Bastion and these Exotics, you will have a deadly combination that few enemies can withstand.
Despite the changes made to the Exotic, it still has its flaws. The weapon’s effective range is relatively narrow, meaning that you will need to be in close proximity to your targets in order to fully utilize it. While this may not be an issue in easier activities, it can prove to be challenging when using Bastion in more difficult content like Grandmaster difficulty missions.
Similarly, Bastion is equipped with a 5-round magazine, which can be considered a drawback in comparison to the top Fusion Rifles on the market today. These rifles often come with perks such as Reconstruction, Envious Assassin, and Overflow, making the small magazine size of Bastion less desirable. However, using the Kinetic Loader mod can help alleviate this issue, but it is still important to note as a potential downside of using Bastion.
