In a troubling incident involving Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, a crew member reported, “It seems like a bird strike. Smoke appeared from one engine, followed by an explosion,” as per the Jeonnam Fire Department’s statements. Fortunately, the injured crew member has been admitted to a hospital in Mokpo and is currently in stable condition.
Bird Strike as a Primary Factor
During a recent press briefing at the Sejong Government Complex, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) disclosed critical information regarding the incident. They indicated that just before landing, the control tower received a warning from the Jeju Air flight about a potential bird strike. Approximately one minute following this alert, the pilot issued a ‘Mayday’ call, with the resulting crash occurring roughly five minutes afterward.
The accident investigation team has successfully retrieved the flight recorder, with plans to secure the voice recorder as circumstances allow. This data will be crucial in reconstructing the events leading up to the crash.
Incident Overview
The accident transpired at 9:05 AM when Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, traveling from Bangkok to Muan, collided with the outer wall of the runway during its landing approach. The incident resulted in extensive fire damage to the aircraft, leaving only the tail section relatively intact.
