Suspected gunman arrested after stray bullet kills sports Youtuber

NYPD has apprehended a suspect in the accidental death of sports YouTuber Jeremy Cummings during a drive-by shooting.

On July 2, 2024, a shooting occurred in Harlem where the 37-year-old victim was struck in the back and abdomen after the accused opened fire on a group.

After Cummings passed away at the hospital, police revealed that they did not suspect him to be the intended victim. As of August 13, the New York Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the crime.

After being detained, 21-year-old Mohamed Sawaneh was escorted out of the 28th Precinct hours later and transported to an unknown location by an unmarked police vehicle. He maintained his innocence to amNewYork throughout the process.

Cummings had dedicated three years to building a loyal audience on YouTube through his channel ‘JermSportsTV’, which featured frequent posts of short clips from sporting events. By the time of his passing, he had amassed over 35,000 subscribers.

Despite Cummings being shot at Eighth Avenue and West 118th Street in the afternoon, the assailant fired at him from a White Honda Accord while driving by, resulting in his death.

Sawaneh is facing charges for one count of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, failure to report an incident, and two counts of criminal possession of a firearm.

The NYPD has alleged that after the Honda Accord collided with a van, the individual fled the scene. Upon searching the abandoned vehicle, a mobile phone was discovered containing selfies of the suspect with a gun and photographs of the group Cummings was in during the time of the shooting.

According to Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Dasha Kabakova, previous Google searches on the phone also revealed queries about “how to load bullets”into a gun.

Despite crashing the Honda Accord, Sawaneh is now facing accusations of stealing a CitiBike from a 13-year-old. According to reports, he threatened the teenager at gunpoint before fleeing the scene by pedaling away and hiding in Ohio. However, Sawaneh maintains that he is innocent and claims he “didn’t do sh**”.

Despite Sawaneh having no previous criminal record, the police have not disclosed a potential motive for the shooting, stating that this aspect of the case is still being investigated. The accused is scheduled to appear in court again on August 16.
