Following their 17th debut anniversary, SNSD’s Taeyeon shares insights on how the group has managed to maintain their strong bond for nearly two decades.
Recently, on August 18, the leader and soloist of Girls’ Generation, Taeyeon, made a special appearance as a guest in the latest video of “MMTG – Civilization Express”on their official YouTube channel.
The K-pop star served as a temporary mentor for one day, in anticipation of the MMTG’s upcoming trio idol project featuring MC JaeJae, dancer-choreographer Gabee, and content creator SeungHyun.
As one of the most acclaimed vocalists in the K-pop industry, Taeyeon was asked to assess which three members should take on the role of lead vocalist. During a discussion about the song selection process for the album, she offered them some valuable advice.
“First, I spread out the songs, collect and just select the songs that suit my concept. I trust my intuition, but I also listen to the staff’s suggestions and opinions.”
She carried on speaking:
“Some people say that with this much experience, I should express my opinions strongly, but I’m very cooperative. So I rely on my staff a lot. That’s the secret to my longevity.”
The icon allowed the trio to perform a song one by one in order to select the position of the main vocalist, and provided her feedback for each of their performances.
Despite choosing Gabee, Taeyeon still managed to comfort the trio by saying:
“I don’t think there’s a right answer for a singer. It’s different for everyone. What sounds good to my ears might not sound good to someone else. Just be sincere.”
Following the evaluation, JaeJae sought further advice from Taeyeon, particularly regarding potential conflicts that could arise within the team.
“Do you think there will be a discord between the three of us? Some people were worried that the three of us might have conflicts. They all said that we’d fight over who would be the center.”
Upon hearing this, Taeyeon, who had been a member of a team that had maintained a strong bond for 17 years, revealed the secret to the group’s long-lasting friendship, stating:
“You have to fight and tease each other like that to become close. You’d be better off fighting once. We (Girls’ Generation) (often) get together and talk openly about (their concerns). You have to express them unconditionally without feeling embarrassed. It’s important to be always honest and acknowledge them. That’s all you need.”
When questioned about what she does when she feels like running away, Taeyeon playfully responded, eliciting laughter from those around her.
“I want to run away, but I held back because I have contractual obligations.”
