On the night of April 20, Tao, a former member of EXO, unexpectedly accused DJ Martin Garrix of being unprofessional and showing disdain towards him during a livestream. Tao shared during the livestream, which took place backstage at an event, that he and Martin Garrix had previously agreed to perform together at the Shanghai Music Festival.
Despite the DJ’s unexpected deviation from the plan, Tao revealed that Martin Garrix did not take part in the rehearsal and ultimately did not perform at the official event. As a result, Tao was forced to perform alone to ensure the show went on smoothly. He also expressed his regret to the audience for the performance not aligning with the advertised lineup.
“Having been in the entertainment industry for 13 years and now in my 30s, I have never encountered such a situation before. The individual in question has violated our initial agreement by refusing to appear on stage with me, without providing any explanation. Despite the fact that the show began at 7:00 p.m., they went ahead with a solo performance for an hour, completely disregarding our planned collaborative performance. I remained patient until 8:00 p.m., but received no response as to whether they would still join me on stage. Their disrespect towards me is completely unacceptable,”Tao expressed his frustration during a livestream following the show.

Despite his busy schedule, Martin Garrix made sure to upload a video providing his perspective on the situation. Because he and his team had flown in that same morning, he was unable to attend the rehearsal. Garrix stated that he was initially unaware of a planned collaboration with Tao, but was informed of it later. However, during his performance, Tao did not appear for their scheduled song.
The DJ’s explanation was considered invalid as Tao’s involvement in the event was displayed on the poster. Additionally, Tao was featured in a backstage livestream during Garrix’s set, during which he repeatedly inquired about when he would be able to perform on stage.
At present, the dispute ranks among the top 5 most talked about topics on Weibo (a Chinese social network). It is anticipated that this controversy will significantly impact the DJ’s reputation in this market.
